Day 19 Renovation Update with Photos (Mag 3)

I finally was able to go out and take photos of my renovation. The seed I used was the infamous Magnificent 3 (Midnight II, Bedazzled and Moonlight). Last weekend, I did overseed again (low setting) on the areas that haven't filled in much, since I'm running out of time up north here. I'm getting sprouts pretty much everywhere. The front lawn gets the afternoon sun and is doing better than the back lawn that gets less sun, but it's all coming along.

It looks like many of us are in the same boat, some good spots and some not so good! I'd love to hear opinions of where I'm at with any suggestions of next steps. I put on roughly 2 1/2 pounds of seed/1,000 sq feet and it seems to be working pretty well.

When are you thinking of fertilizing again? I have heard conflicting advice.

Since we seeded on almost the same day I am curious whether you plan another fall feeding before the final one in November, or will you just hold out until the end of the season?

Al, I am growing cucumbers in the EarthTainer for the first time ever, and so far, they seem to like the environment. earthworm, Since I mix 2 Cups of 14-14-14 CRF in with the Dolomite Lime about 6 inches deep for the Pepper and CornTainers, it made sense to simply transfer the over-wintered Peppers, and put them in a new 'Tainer after the Lime and fertilization process was done. They really looked terrible in February, but I just cut all of the leaves off but 2, and trimmed the stems to about a 6 inch height. This is what they looked like on April 18: One Month later loaded with foliage and blossoms: Our temperatures here rarely get below freezing, however in December we had 3 straight nights of temps in the low 20s - - but the Pepper's root system survived. I am definitely going to follow this procedure next Season too, as they really have a jump-start vs. the Peppers I started from seed on January 1. Raybo

BillHill.....Thank you for the insight. I am definitely a lawn nut as you say, and I would definitely like to round everything up and start over, but here is what is keeping me from doing so: 1) I was about "this" close to a renovation last year, having cut the grass nearly to the ground, dethatched, and then reseeding. In hindsight, I should have just bit the bullet and rounded it up, too. 2) My wife and neighbors would think that I am crazier than they already do...For some reason, mentally, I have it in my head that no one will think me odd if I wait another year, lol. Just the other day a friend mentioned me to a person at the far end of the development and she said, "Is that the guy who is always working on his lawn?" 3) My lawn is not ideal, but it is not horrible. It greened up VERY early this year and is ok by most people's standards - just not my own standards. 4) Now that I have abandoned organics in my front lawn (I still fertilize organically, but use chemicals on the weeds), I am thinking that I should spend a full season combating the weeds so that there is less of a problem next fall. Right now, I fear that I will have major weed issues next spring if I were to renovate this fall. With all that said, there is a good chance that you will see me here in a few months looking for renovating advice!

two cycle nut....I am glad to hear that your renovation worked well and that weeds were crowded out by KBG. I probably haven't seen enough to really say for sure, but if I were betting, I would say that the average renovated lawn will not be able to crowd out weeds for quite some time and that some use of weed killer will go a long way to helping things move along. I walked over to my neighbor's new KBG lawn today (renovated in the fall), and I absolutely couldn't believe the difference in just 2 weeks. I declared war on the weeds, and it appears that the grass has spread into most of the areas where the weeds had died out. The only bare spots that he has are where some animals went to work and dug out large holes early in the spring. When I renovate next year, I am going to use weed killer in the same way that he did. I enjoy fertilizing organically, but my new policy is "hybrid" and I'll cheat whenever necessary.

Some updated photos: Day 24: Day 29: Day 35, just after first mowing: Overall I'm very pleased so far, thank you so much everyone for all of your advice! I did get a lot of weeds, but most appear to be annuals and should be cooked soon. I have some bare spots due to anthills and some reeeally hyper squirrels, but they should fill fine. And I am afraid I may have a fungus problem in some spots (I have another thread on that), but I think I can address that. Still this has been the most satisfying seeding I have ever done. Thanks again!

Thanks for the compliment eastpena, I appreciate it.

As far as fertilizing, a buddy of mine said I should do another 1/2 treatment of starter fertilizer real soon, he said the lawn would take off. Other than that, I was going to fertilize at the end of October. What's your plan Paul?

I'm hoping my backyard will soon catch up with the front! They were seeded at the same time, the front just gets more sun. The photo of the backyard above makes it look worse than it is, however.

Your front lawn looks like the lawn on the sides of my house, nice and full. Your backyard looks like my front yard, very patchy. I'm getting worried about my front lawn so I ordered 3 more lbs of seed.

I was going to fertilize on the 1-month anniversary.

Do we use starter or regular fertilizer?

I was going to go on Oct. 6-7 weekend with regular Scotts stuff.

I was thinking of fertilizing at 30 days, but now am thinking to wait until the first mowing, or 6 weeks before thanksgiving, whichever comes first (to allow for a final late fall application). But I don't really know what is best, hoping to learn that real soon!

This sounds like a good topic for a new post! What to use, when to use it? I always heard 30 days after seeding, but with what? More Starter? TB with Iron? I have heard both.

Parafly, Paul, Eastpenna and others. I took the dive today on fertilzer. Went to HD and picked up another bag of starter fertilizer, a bag of winterizer fert for November and 2 bags of Milanorgite for October (middle of the month).

I just finished up spreading the starter fertilizer on my 21st day since my reno. I used my friend's advice and went with 1/2 quanity of fertilizer, while walking very gingerly. I'm getting a lot of seedlings all over now with very few completely blank spots. Hoping the starter fert gives it a nice kick, which I really need before the frost (average 1st frost here at the beginning of October).

I'll let you all know in a few weeks if this works :).

Went to HD and picked up another bag of starter fertilizer, a bag of winterizer fert for November and 2 bags of Milanorgite for October (middle of the month).

I would just recommend that you check the soil temps before using the Milanorgite in mid October, it is considered an organic and won't do much when the soil temps go below 55 degrees. Please do not get me wrong, it is wonderful stuff and I plan on using it myself as I want to go organic, it is just that soil activity (those little micro buggers)slow down in cold weather.

Just to double check, you did get the Winterizer WITHOUT PLUS 2 WEED CONTROL.

I am curious what everybody else was going to use going forward (next year)? Is anyone else going to switch to organics? I will still use the winterizer as a final shot in November.
