Growing Orchids in a Deep Pot Without Drainage

Jeffrey Schneider

I've grown orchids for years. Of course, always watering, letting them drain sufficiently in well ventilated pots.

I would like to plant 5 Phalaenopsis in a 16" x 16" wood cube pot with a metal insert, orchid mix covered with Reindeer Moss.

My question: Do you think it's feasible for the orchids to do well if they are watered moderately, once a week with a sprinkler type watering can. I figured that, if I am careful, the water that does settle on the bottom (remember deep 16" so the roots won't be touching this water) will keep the roots and orchids nice and humid.

Thoughts?

Thank you!

Jeff
