Summer blooming phals - some that are being offered now

Here's a list of some summer-blooming phals. The hybrids are often crosses of summer blooming species with the big whites and pinks to increase the size of the flower and/or the number of flowers.

So I'm counting it a "summer bloomer" if it has 50% or more more summer blooming species. All of these are for sale at various internet vendors, including Hausermann's, Norman's, Parkside, OrchidWeb, Carter and Holmes, etc.

This list just scratches the surface of what's out there. There are many others with summer-blooming ancestry, as several of the summer-blooming species intensity color in their offspring, or add heavy substance or waxy or shiny texture.

1. Doritis and hybrids (Doritis has tall, sequentially blooming spikes, and smallish flowers). On some (like Sharon Schay)the spike would be too tall for many tastes. Flowers are usually intense velvety or irridescent magenta--very striking:

D. Purple Gem (in spike now at Hausermann)

D. Queen Beer (50% Doritis)

D. Red Elf (100% summer -- Doritis x p fasciata)

OrchidWeb and Hausermann both offer a number of Doritis hybrids with varying amount of Doritis.

2. Violacea and hybrids shortish spikes of intensely colored flowers. Long lasting and blooms sequentially

P. 'Sweetheart' (vio x Jungho viotris-- 75% vio) at Norman's. Gorgeous intense pink flowers. Color is so intense just two flowers make a show.

P. Penang Girl (vio x venosa)

P. Princess Kaiulani (vio x amboinensis) Oak Hill has this

P. Sweet Memory (50% vio, 25% ambo) Parkside is offering

P. Sogo Grape (26% vio, 26% ambo), Parkside, Oak Hill, Hausermann has.

These are all gorgeous.

Don't forget P. bellina (100% bellina)

3. Amboinensis and hybrids.

P. Orchid World (50% ambo, 12% vio)

P. Sogo Rose (34% ambo, 25% vio)

P. Brother Sara Gold (31% ambo, 25% venosa)

P. Autumn Sun (62% ambo)

4. Venosa and hybrids. These are usually yellow and have a characteristic white center. However, lots of summer bloomers have some venosa in them. Big yellows have more big-white ancestry and are paler. The darker yellows have less big-white ancestry and are smaller flowers.

5. Lueddemanniana-- this appears in the ancestry of many summer bloomers, especially waxy reds, purples and magentas. I don't have a list of luedde hybrids, tho.

Hope this is helpful to someone who has been thinking about how to extend the phal blooming season.
