I have several locations with white hyacinth bean vines. They look pretty ratty during the winter, but they make it. Then in the spring they come back like gangbusters. If yours has been in the house, then I would keep it there until March or so, depending on the weather. Mine are on the west side of my house and on a trellis where they get about 1/2 day sun. They are thirsty plants and do well with adequate water. The first year they seem to stay short little 'bush' vines, then take off and send runners up to about 10 ft. Hi Tommy Nice vine! I planted one time with purple cowpeas, they are really fast growers and edible too but I don't really care for the taste. There are different color of flowers also. The vines that I saw in Monticello were really pretty and they were planted with other beans. Silvia

Don't know if I will get any seed off this plant this year as the day before yesterday my DD (Darn Dog) took off after a squirrel and plowed right into it breaking the whole top off at the crown. I am trying to salvage it now. I have another growing on the other side of the house that I am going to try to get some seed from. I will let you know how it goes. I hear people all the time say that they have hummers in very busy urban areas. I think the trick is persistance and at least one feeder to help attract them especially early in the spring. In spring I use a large hour glass shaped bottle feeder that has a bright red top and base with very large gloxinia type red flowers (perky pet brand). Once the hummers are here I usually retire that feeder as it also attracts bees because it drips then I hang my saucer feeders which don't drip and the bees aren't interested in. I started out when we moved into this house 5 years ago with one feeder very few plants and determination. That summer I had my first hummer. Each year they have increased slightly. THis was my best summer ever and actually had two hummers share the same feeder at the same time although very briefly. I also had my first hummer arrive a month earlier than past years. So I feel really blessed this year. Penny

If I had insisted on living in Florida when we were first married, my husband would have meekly obeyed, since I was 21 and he just turned 18. Now he has matured, and realized he can do what he wants and I'll still be crazy about him, and here I am stuck with these icky cold winters. Guess we need to strike when the irons hot. :) The Hyacinth Bean has always grown anywhere for me, if their was enough sun. All kinds of soil. It's grown in my garden every year, as it is my DH's favorite, and I like to shell the beans. I have short fat purple pods, long fat purple pods, white, and and long white with a purple stripe down the side. :) arum
