What's Your Reason For Growing A Cover Crop?

I attended a seminar on cover crops put on by the Extension Service. They handed out a dandy book: "Managing Cover Crops Profitably" published by the Sustainable Agriculture Network. The book sumarized top regional cover crop species (14 regions) under six different reasons: nitrogen source, soil builder, erosion fighter, subsoil loosener, weed fighter, and pest fighter. I was taken by the use of forage radish (a monster radish) as a subsoil loosener, because I am covinced that hardpan is an important limiter of yields. Also the use of mustard (e.g. canola or yellow mustard) as pest fighters. When choped up and incorporated into the soil they act as a commercial fumigant would. So I ask: why are you using cover crops? And might our selection be improved by considering these six reasons? Regards, Peter.
