Watering much less outside?

At the recent orchid society meeting, I was griping to an old-timer about resenting my orchids because, since they've been outside, the ones in bark have needed watering every other day.

He said, for his orchids in bark that are outside, he waters every 2-3 weeks. Yes, weeks. My mouth fell open, and I said but, but, but my bark is bone dry every other day.

No matter, he said - the humidity keeps the plants hydrated. He said that, in fact, one of the longer-term old-timers had had his orchids outside for 3 weeks and was going to water the ones in bark for the 1st time the night before, but it rained.

Can this be? Is this a snipe hunt thing that veterans pull on novices? Are all you experienced growers shaking your heads and saying, well, another one fell for the watering-every-two-weeks-outside con?

If this is for real, I can get more orchids because the whole collection will require so much less time.... until the fall, but that's a long way off. The tortured logic of an addict.

Thanks, Whitecat8
