Cathedral Church of Saint Mary in Murcia, Spain.

The foundation stone was placed in 1388; however regular construction did not begin until 1394. The structure was worked on until 1467 (a good pace back in those days). There were changes and additions and it was not really completed until the 18th century.

It was built on the foundation of a mosque (extremely common in Spain) and it is the only cathedral in the Cartagena/Murcia diocese.

Created in a Baroque style, it is a significant architectural structure. It is really an impressive thing to see.

The cathedral is on Cardenal Belluga Plaza.

This is the main door, Peuerta del Perdon or door of forgiveness. It is used only during the most solemn occasions.The entire facade (188 feet high) was designed by sculptor and architect Jaime Bort.

Seating capacity - if there were 6,000 people, then they were sitting close to each other. What is amazing, is that this is only a semi-circle. A full arena would hold more than 10,000. That is much larger than many college basketball venues. It seems that as control of the area changed (it happened all over western Europe, but particularly Spain), buildings would be trashed and the foundation used for something else. That was common with many of the churches we saw. A mosque would be taken down and the foundation for a Christian church would be built. After the Byzantines were in control in southeastern Spain, there were many other cultures that were there. They did not really care about digging up the past (that's a pun). The only way that this theater was found was due to new construction standards mandated better foundations and thus they went digging. And, what do you know, there was a Roman theater. What they were going to build there was cancelled. This photo shows some of the different ways of constructing things at the amphitheater site.

After two restful days at sea, we arrive in Cartagena Spain for an 8:00 arrival. Spaindaytours will again provide the tour as we visit Murcia and Cartagena with a full-day tour. This is a view of the city as we tie up to the pier. City hall is the building with the clock. I have not been able to determine what the other buildings are.

Next to the Admiral's Salon is a chapel. This painting, by Alejo Fernandez, is titled Virgin of the Navigators and is thought to have been painted 1531 Ã¯Â¿Â½" 1536. It depicts the Virgin Mary as she connects the old world under her left foot and the new world under her right foot. Among those depicted in the main panel are Ferdinand II, Charles V, Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci. Depicted in the four outlying panels are: St. Sebastian, St. James the Great, St. Elmo and St. John the Evangelist.

The bell tower was erected in four sections, using different styles. There were all sorts of problems getting this project completed. It is 90 meters high and has 25 bells - each one is named after a saint. I don't know how anyone would be able to tell the difference.

This is the Door of the Apostles, where most visitors enter. There is no fee to the general portion of the church; however there is a small fee to enter the museum and to see all the art that is there. The hours of the cathedral are generally 9 a.m. to 1 p.m and 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.

A closer view of the Door of the Apostles. Created in 1488 it is a Florid Gothic style. Along with the the four Apostles, the shield of Queen Isabel is above the door.

The sun was shining on this part of the cathedral and it was difficult to compensate due to the color of the building.

This shows more of the Baroque design. It is near the Door of the Apostles.

The Door of the Apostles is on the southern wall of the cathedral. The entrance on the north wall is called the Door of Chains. I cannot, even after lots of online searching, determine why it is named that.

At any rate this is the view above the Door of Chains. As you can see, this style is similar to the Door of Apostles. That is another view of the design elements of the Murcia Cathedral. We exited through this door.
