So I finally bought that Phrag. caudatum sanderae...

Just a follow-up for all who gave me advice.

I mentioned how I *had* to have Phrag. caudatum sanderae as soon as I saw it, but that I was conflicted between vendors and prices.

Well, in the end I went for the $50 minimum vendor and bought from Windy Hill. Here's what I ordered:

Phrag. caudatum var. sanderae ('Bountiful' AM/AOS x 'Green Goddess')

Phrag. Jason Fischer (Besseae 'Esther Nies' AM/AOS x Mem. Dick Clements 'Cardinal')

Both are NBS to bloom within 12-18 mos. The Jason Fischer looks as if there might be 2 plants (1 the orig older seedling).

And Marilyn threw this in for free!

Phrag. (Red Lightning 'Windy Hill' HCC/AOS x Grande 'Windy Hill' 4N)

A very nice seedling.

All in all, these are 3 of the healthiest plants I have ever purchased, and I will definitely go back to her when I need a phrag fix!

She was very friendly and helpful through my numerous email questions about the phrags that she has (listed and unlisted), based upon my growing conditions.

Now I need to move eveything around and create 'phrag land' (I have 8 or so others) since they all need to share my best light. I may need to finally get that 2nd 5 arm light...

You made out well! Congrats. Nice choices too! Please post photos when they bloom. How big of a span does the Fischer get ?

Congrats, Carolyn - for making a decision, for starters. LOL. You had some good options. The plants sound beauutiful, and it was extra nice for her to send along a 3rd plant on a $50 order. Enjoy! Whitecat8

Well I bought my stone, water pump, water basin, & moss on Saturday & put it all together on Sunday. It is a little ghetto looking right now because I have green wire wrapped around the rock to make sure that the moss is held in place. The rock is a medium sized chunk of lime stone. I went to 5 locations looking for rock, they either had none, or they had the massive boulders that were hundreds of dollars. The final place I visited had lots of small & medium sized stones, So I picked one out & haggled over the price (they had the nerve to ask $50 for a rock that they could have picked up out of a field or construction site). So I got them down to $20. I purchased moss at a pet store in the amphibian section, & a small pump from Home Depot. I had to chisel a bit of the rock away to make it stand up without wobbling. I do not have the right equipment, so I could not drill a hole for the tube, so itÂs just tied onto the stone with more green wire. I'm going to give it a month or two & then put the first plant onto the rock. I am realizing that I need to find a fairly compact growing Phrag. as the stone is not as large as I had planned on. I've dealt with Dean a couple of times. He was pretty on top of it a couple of years back. About a year and a half ago I ordered some things off of his price list that he sends around. This happened and then that and the bottom line is I never got the plants. Now, DON'T misunderstand me he didn't rip me off. I hadn't payed and was waiting for this or that to arrive so he could send them all at once. Then lots of time goes by and some how we strike up a conversation and try another order. Again, nothing. He apologize up and down and even offers me a couple of extra plants but he never gets the whole order together. He is a nice guy, I just think he has tried to spread himself to thin. I even heard he was opening up a nursery but then once again, Nothing. I want to be clear, I'm not trying to bad mouth Dean or the company. The first couple of times I dealt with him everything went smooth and the plants where nice.

I'm extremely confused about compactum. Dendrobium compactum that is. Just wondering after looking at a picture of Den. compactum on a species site whether the label on your orchid is correct. Den. Sabine is hybrid and perhaps your plant is really Den. Sabine x Den. bigibbum var. compactum. The shape comes from a previous infusion of Den. bigibbum and the style of the plant comes a Den. canaliculatum ancestor.

I'm with you, Whitecat. I gave up on the gravel pans after about a week, long before I ever got to orchids. Just too filthy, too heavy, too much trouble. Surface area or not, I'm for the easy life. Downstairs in the light room I splash water all over the concrete floor while I'm down there, that temporarily raises the humidity about 20%, but it's back down again in a few hours. Upstairs they just make do with the drip trays and the ambient humidity. It's only a problem on the coldest days when the heat runs more or less continuously. Fortunately that's only a week or two max here. And BTW, I've measured humidity at the level of the base of the plant and at bench level, and the humidity is definitely a little higher at the base of the plant (in sphag) where the drying sphag moistens the air a bit in the area immediately around the leaves.

Another good place for a phrag fix is piping rock orchids. I dunno if you know or not, but hes one of only two or three vendors licensed to sell Phrag kovachii and its hybrids. I've looked through his list and its got a lot of interesting stuff. Orchids limited as well has a great selection (thats who your Jason Fischer is named after ;) ) Good luck with your new babies!
