Need some phrag buying advice, which vendor for this plant?

I know that there are slipper forums for this question, but it's a little sensitive for me to post there.

This is all about Phrag. caudatum sanderae. This is a plant that I never know that I wanted until I saw it, and now I *really* want it.

OL has a special running on SOF for this plant. A 5-7 in (13-18 cm), approx 2 yr from BS for $25 + $10 SH. Supposed to be a pretty good price.

Windy Hill Gardens has this plant 20-30cm $20 or 40+cm $30. + 10 SH. But you have to spend $50.

So, the Windy Hill price is a much bigger plant for the $$, but I have to buy 2 plants (and nothing else that they have jumps out at me).

OL has a great reputation. Windy Hill seems to be well thought of as well.

I'm in conversations with Windy Hill about a couple of other plants, but I don't *want* them - I want to spend the $$ for the 1 plant that I want.

So, please help me! What's a girl to to do?

I would go with the bigger phrag.

One option would be to contact OL and see if they have larger plants at a price you like. Whitecat8

The more composted-type materials you can get into your soil, the better. Also, I agree that a couple hours of sun might not be enough for those sun loving plants. You might be able to grow some greens in some of the shadier areas, but those fruiting veggies need some sun to do well. You might want to put a couple of them in containers where they can get full sun. You can do any of those in pots, but the tomatoes are going to need at least a 5 gal bucket (preferably more). When I lived in AZ, my peppers did well in 5 gal. buckets (they dried out fast though). I have never tried a topsy turvy. Maybe you can do an experiment...one in the ground in your sunniest spot, one in a tub or bucket and one in the topsy turvy. See which one works best for you. Greetings, Neighbor. Sorry to be so late to the party ... I just saw this. Your order now stands at 2 Reve d'Or 2 Cl. Eden 1 Cl. Pinkie Abraham Darby Carefree Beauty Double Delight am I right? I grow all of these except Cl. Eden. Reve d'Or is a baby now, and is going to be planted on the south wall of my house where it can get some heat. My friend in Lake of the Woods grows Reve d'Or brilliantly. (that's one plant) I am trying to contain Cl. Pinkie on an 8' arch. I think it would be happier, and show better, if planted on a fence where it could sprawl a bit. I love the foliage, and the thornless nature, and the flowers make me smile. Abraham Darby wants to get tall and it's self supporting. The one Olga grows in her yard is the best I've ever seen. I thought I had a photo of it, but I don't. Carefree Beauty is a large, lax, self supporting shrub. Double Delight grows like a typical modern hybrid tea, thick canes, straight up. I grow 800 roses, and I spray fungicide every two weeks. Bayer Advanced Disease Control (available at Lowes or specialty garden centers) is my choice. I do not spray insecticide in the garden! I let the birds and the good bugs strike a balance with the bad bugs, and it works for me. Make plans to come visit. I'm planning an Open House, and all GW friends are always welcome. Connie

Welcome keriann. For lighting I use a mix of half warm half cool white fluorescent lights held 3-4 inches above the plants 16 hours on, 8 hours off. Just about any seed starting mix works fine. Water from the bottom when the trays start to feel light and wait until true leaves form and then fertilize at 1/4 strength. I only started a few from your list from seed. Petunias I start the last week in February and its been a while, but I think Osteospermum is started about then as well. Verbena, zinnias and asters I start the third week in March. Its a great way to get a jump on summer. tj

LOL, don't hold your breath about Lowes having the same product now if it has been long enough, unless you are sure you can find the pile you pulled it off. I just looked at my bag and it has the same label and color scheme on the bag (though it was identical at first glance) except it is not labeled "dolomitic lime', but rather "Gardenlime" and under that in big bold letters "great calcium and magnesium source" of something to that effect. So Lowes clearly has at least two versions of 40 pound bags. Either way, it is plenty enough so this is not something to worry about for yours at this point and may never be. You had just asked about details and I pulled it out of thin air as an example of the sorts of details that we can get bogged down in. The lime is not your problem now, that's for sure. The filling with water is iffy if you really are under such water usage for that plant, especially with a cover to discourage evaporation that it has, but maybe you are in AZ or something. To be honest I'm skeptical it is using all that water and would measure a better baseline for another couple of days and keep track of it, since I don't want to give you bad advice and I really am not there to be talking. If you find it is using 1.5 gallons per day, then every two days is fine and what I'm shooting for in my head at this point. The plants could easily require more as they get bigger but we're talking now... Don't forget the soil is saturated and has a lot of water capacity too before the wicking action will be lost. It could add another gallon or two, so there is a little safety built in as long as the plants don't cake-dry the setup. Those are just mullings since you may have a better hands on feel than I do, but it's what I'm thinking. In Florida a tomato plant your size would still drink less than 2 liters in the heat, but we have a higher humidity to deal with so that's what I'm concerned I might err on. Meaning, growers usually have plants in sizes other than those posted on their sites.

Also, you could get only the larger plant from Windy Hill and eat $20 of the $50 minimum. In your place, I could rationalize the extra $20 for a plant that would bloom sooner, assuming the $30 plant will bloom in about a year. But then, I'm pretty far gone in orchid dependency.

Another place you might inquire is Carolina Orchids. He doesn't have that particular one listed but he doesn't have all of them listed. He will be on the pricy side but the plants are fabulous - you will get what you pay for. I purchased several from him last year and all were multiple mature growths and have bloomed their hearts out this spring.

Here is an example of the quality - here are two pictures of Phrag. Grande 'Glenn's Pride' {{gwi:142253}} {{gwi:142255}} I don't remember what I paid for it but I've been completely happy with it and the others from him.

terpguy- Thanks for the Piping Rock tip... for an extra $25, I could have BS.... caudatum is supposed to be a slow grower, so this would be a good way to go.

Brooke- I'll have to ask Carolina orchids if they have it.

Whitecat8 - I'd rather not just toss away the $20, I mean if I have to pay the extra $20, I could get a Mexipedium too for that $20 plus $5-10 more ;)
OL does have BS, but at a hefty price.

Piping Rock sounds like a great option. Or, you could get 2 of the same from Windy Hill and sell one on e-Bay at a slight profit.

Unless - depending on how compulsive you are, you could do a search of every "good" grower to see if they have the plant at a good price.

If you need a list of growers, just let me know. LOL
