EMERGENCY! Crown Rot help needed!

Ok, here is a follow-up to my post below about saving my 2 clearance phals... I took them out of their pots to repot them and this is what I found!

Phal #1:

Do both have Crown Rot????????? do I need to cut off all of the black????? Even close to the leaves??? I already took a few mushy roots off. Do I continue? Do I remove all of the crown that is black? Do I dip in pure hydrogen peroxide and then dust with cinnamon and then put it back in the pot?

HELPPPPPPPPPPPP!

are they goners for sure?

wait... do I have to remove EVERYTHING that is black? what if it's still firm? i'm worried about taking too much off. thoughts?????

I wouldn't worry much about it. I would just repot in fresh media and let the plants settle down. Sometimes over stressing over the plants can cause more harm than good. It looks like you did well cleaning off the dead roots and you have lots of live ones left...the stub of black at the bottom is probably the remains of the old crown and roots, and is usually brown or black, and no cause for concern as the crown above it seems quite healthy. Relax, enjoy and let your orchids grow! :)

Alright so I only have figured out how to post photos in reply so here goes, I hope this helps more. The OP photo is taken today, I open that window to let the sun shine on it on sunny afternoons but it's only a south facing window and it's somewhat filtered because it's going through a screen, so I try to gently take it out to get direct sun occasionally on mild mornings or early evenings. This photo below is what it looked like the day it arrived at my house, as you can see it had some brown needles from day 1, but I didn't consider that a problem, I didn't consider they would have sent me a plant that was already sick.

You mention that your area is hot and dry; is it that way now and has been for the last while? Reason I ask is I live in a fairly dry climate, and during dry spells most if not all my rhubarb goes dormant. Looks like it died, leaves all turn brown and dry up. But it always comes back the next spring, or if we get a sustained wet spell. I generally will water a bit during droughts, but not usually enough to bring the plants back, as I typically am not interested in harvesting rhubarb in the summer/fall. Rhubarb is pretty hard to kill in my experience. There was one root we transplanted and forgot about when we were moving. Found it in the field 5 years later, it did fine without any water or care from us. Are you sure your rhubarb is dead and not just dormant?

ty for the replies everyone. im not too attached to it but I do want to keep it as long as possible. id like to see a keiki grow out but im not holding out much hope for that. I wont go overboard but i'll try my best and hope it recovers. its a fangtastic color variety that I haven't much seen show up again although similar yellow/pink varieties are common enough in the stores. I have a lot of plants and none are in a garden theyre mostly smaller plants and even the brugmansia is a small one1.5 ft tall or so. there were and are some plants I have that grow too big or too fast which im more willing to part with but smaller ones I tend to hold on to. I do have Neem oil which eradicated the mealy bugs that grew on my brugmansia nearly 6 months ago. it works like a charm and I only needed 2 treatments for it. the white patches are starting on the lowest leaf too so it'll deal with that too.

Hello All, An update here. I've finally concluded it's the water and not the fertilizer because it was happening in baby plants that had never been fertilized. It's a reddish brown crust (iron?) forming on the innermost leaves of the plants. IÃ¢ÂÂm attaching a picture of the latest victim that was transplanted from a mother leaf a couple weeks ago. You can also see a brown crust forming on the perlite. Something tells me that is not a good sign. One variety in particular is very sensitive to it (Caribbean Blue) but some varieties (Starry Night Blue, Buckeye Lazy Daze) are immune to the problem. Unfortunately, 75% of the varieties I'm growing now are showing this problem to some degree. Our town water dept. claims the water is soft but lime scale deposits in the bottom of my coffee pot and at the drinking fountain at work say otherwise. I have lived in hard water areas in the West before and the local water where I live now in MA is not that hard, but apparently it has enough minerals it to cause problems. (Most of MA gets its water from the Quabbin reservoir which has very soft water but our town uses local ponds). I have an aquarium test kit in storage that I will have to dig out to test the hardness and pH of the water. In the meantime I bought a few gallons of purified water (reverse osmosis) that I will be using for the time being. If anyone else has some insight into this, IÃ¢ÂÂd appreciate it, thanks!

You have some healthy looking phals that just need repotting now that you have removed all old media. Peroxide won't harm the remaining roots, but do not use cinnamon--it will just dessicate those healthy roots. You don't seem to understand that the crown is the top of the plant where new leaves emerge, not the top of the roots, where the black is just the dried remains of older leaves that have been shead naturally. Crown rot is wet and mushy and spreads rapidly. You have a multitude of lovely viable roots. Pack media gently but firmly between and around them. Good luck.

Thanks again all. I guess I'll leave it alone and hope for the best. They are repotted in bark now and will have a chance to dry out a bit.

Whatever it is, it isn't crown rot. It's well below the crown. There are lots of good healthy roots. As Calvin, Albertan and Highjack say, don't worry about it.

Every phal I've ever repotted has looked like that. Just adding to the overwhelming chorus chanting that your plant is ok :)

Sorry, I guess I'm going to be jumpy at this stuff for awhile until I get used to what is "normal" THANKS!

They are both in bark now.
