Winterizing Sprinklers Question

Hi there,

I just made an appointment for the second week of October to have my lawn company come out and winterize my sprinkler. For my area, usually our first freeze is around the end of October.

Since this has been a crazy year weatherwise, I am wondering, what happens if we happen to get a freeze before then? Would the sprinklers be totally ruined, or is that only with a really hard freeze? Also, there something I could or should do if we happen to freeze early?

when the company winterizes your system do they fill it with antifreeze or just blow out the system with compressed air?

Here in NJ they just blow out my system. I wouldn't worry about it. It would need to be cold enough to freeze the water in the lines below ground, that would be more than freeze to make that happen.

I think they just blow it out with air... Thank you for the information! I had been wondering about this since last year, actually, but luckily it never froze before they winterized me.

greg, JMHO, you don't think you have much to worry about. You could do the winterizing the system yourself. Check out the YouTube vids on the subject. aloha

C, If your laterals and heads are lower in elevation than your anti-siphon valve and each sprinkler is lower than the next, you probably are okay. If you have a shut main to your sprinkler system, turn it off. If you haven't seen splitting of the above ground mainlines, you are probably okay. Thaw in the spring will tell. Pray more than once. you've done a good job. the only other thing you can do if you expect an extremely cold winter is connect an air compresser to the outside hosebib and manualy open the valves to clear all the water from the system.

A lot depends on how deep your pipes are and how cold it get and for how long. It takes some extreme cold weather to freeze the ground, and has to be very cold for a fairly long time to penetrate deep. If all you have is a noght or two of cold weather and it gets above freezing during the day, no problem. It is when it drops to single digits at night and only gets up into the teens and low 20's during the day you have to worry about it. Doubt it is that cold where you are now. Sounds more like late November to February weather.

With that said in my area it would be very rare for daytime temps not to get well above freezing, just mostly cold nights.
