From my local weekly:

"Caltrans worker hit in The Cone Zone"

On July 7 at 2 pm Caltrans was repaving the roadway at Hwy 20. One-way traffic control was in effect and traffic was taking turns using the eastbound lane. Ms C.S., 62 stated she "was not used to driving on fresh asphalt" and decided to use the closed westbound lane. She crossed into the Cone Zone and as she rounded a curve in the road she encountered K.S., 60 who was working in the closed lane. She applied her brakes as K.S. tried to jump to safety over a steel guard rail but she was unable to stop and her Ford Van hit the guard rail and K.S., who suffered major injuries, was transported by ambulance to the hospital in Willits. The woman was uninjured. She later stated that she thought "the worker could have jumped out of the way faster". She was cited and released at the scene for reckless driving and causing bodily injury.

Is this unbelievable or what? With an attitude like hers, I doubt she has any friends.

Not slowing, or allowing distance between road workers is a major traffic offense in our state. Several years ago, a young fellow who once stayed with our husband's family to finish off the school year was hit and killed when working with a road crew. It was a very sad and avoidable tragedy.

People get on the road and are in such a hurry to save one or two minutes over a sixty mile trip. I love it when they pass to the right on the berm or other stupid trick and then catch up to them down the road behind a school bus or farm tractor.

There are a gillion or so good fact sheets about the care of poinsettias on the internet. It would be a good idea to take advantage of Google and read a few. That way, you'll be much more comfortable with the whole procedure of re-blooming. I'll attach one of the good fact sheets for you, but let me list a few reasons why people fail with poinsettias. 1. Remove it from the plastic sleeve, which catches the excess water, but allows the plant to sit in that water for days on end. Result? Root rot resulting in wilting and plant death. 2. Avoid warm or cold drafts, but a coolish room is nice. 3. Many people are loath to prune the heck out of these plants....don't fall in to that trap. 4. As spring approaches, check out the root system of your plant to see if it needs to be repotted up one size. Choose a coarse, fast-draining potting medium. 5. When the directions call for 'uninterrupted' dark cycles, they mean it! You cannot do that without artificial intervention. Even street lights beaming into a darkened room could make a difference. So can a flashlight. The reason that poinsettias are considered a disposable plant is that once away from the growth regulating sprays of commercial greenhouses, they can get very large and leggy. People can't seem to find enough light in their homes during the summer, or enough room. And getting them to rebloom is a real challenge in the average home. Kay,Blackie stays close to me when I am outside,and I really have to watch where my feet are going,as she will walk a few steps in front of me,and suddenly just lay down right in front of my feet,wanting my attention.She the cat that came here about 7 -8 years ago,so skinny and starving, and I went in the house to see what I could find her to eat, and I gave her some sliced ham.I didnt have cat food.She decided to stay and make this her home, so after she had some kittens,I had her fixed.I have one of her babies in the house,its the one that got hit by a car and lost a hind leg.I tell you what tho, that cat can move with 3 legs. Thank you Rita.Its not too hard to get a good picture of the Hummingbirds.Just have to stand still for a few minutes.They are pretty use to me out there watching them. Debbie, Mine are gone too., now.I will have to go out and bring the feeders in and get them washed up and put away for next sping.Like you, I miss them ,too, already. So, I'm narrowing it down. They're probably not Gota de Miel because they're not really plum shaped, and probably not Sara Goldstar because they're not that large. I can't find a picture of Marizol Magic, but since it says it's a determinate, I'm thinking that's probably not it, since these are grown for market, and for some reason, I don't equate determinates as being typically grown for commercial production, although I'm probably totally wrong. I couldn't find anything about Marizol Gold Cherry at all, although there seems to be a Marizol Gold tomato that's not a cherry. So, that leaves a regular bi-color cherry, Isis Candy, and Gajo de Melon, but all the descriptions seem larger than these. Hopefully my tomato guy will have a name for me next week, but if not, at least I'll have seeds of something I know I enjoy!

Ok, the older one drank her orange juice this morning without knowing her meds were in it. At the end she was told that I am the one that suggested it and she said that was pretty smart of me because she didn't taste anything. Now the little one. I think we will have to force it tonight as she won't drink anything with even 1/8th of the meds in it. I don't want to waste the medicine so if she won't drink or eat today, she will have to be forced tonight. We use something that looks like an eyedropper but it has measurements on the side. She will take the motrin grape flavor but not the antibiotic. It is good that women don't have children when they are older - this exhausts me.

In our area fines are doubled in Work Zones. I hope the "cited and released at the scene" will hurt her pocket book for a long time--plus points on her license! She's lucky she didn't kill the worker.

What got to me most was her attitude, this "I am not used to driving on fresh asphalt, so I'll drive on the closed lane" and: "This worker could have jumped a little faster when he saw ME coming" is just too much.
Traffic fines here are also doubled in Work Zones, she apparently just doesn't believe rules apply to her.
Unfortunately there are many like her on the road.

I think part of her punishment should be picking up trash on the freeway. See how she likes having cars whiz by her at 80 mph.

"I'm not used to driving of fresh asphalt" Uhm.........do you wonder if that could translate to not wanting to get fresh tar splattered on a nice clean car finish? I have directed traffic in a past life. It's danged scary. One time I had to bail out of the path of car who wasn't going to stop at a funeral procession. I swear to God, this person was betting I'd jump out of the way.

I am with you too Marilyn. Some drivers seem to think they have an entitlement to streets and anybody on two legs is fair game.

While trimming large trees on a two lane road we had to close off one way and cone traffic to the other side putting opposing traffic in the parking lane and no parking signs. This was set up for a couple months and moved along block by block.

There was a wire running down the middle for street lights suspended from cross wires from poles. A flag man was holding back traffic so one of the climbers could drop a large limb over the street.

A lady in a Cadillac did not want to wait, went around the flagman and got close enough for the wire to come down on her hood.I think she needed a change of clothes. That happened in 78.

Be sure and let us know what happened to this idiot. I'm willing to bet that all she will get is a slap on the wrist.

Probability is that I never find out - she was a tourist from out of state and my Weekly publishes whatever they get from Police/Highway patrol reports.
A slap on the wrist is just about all I think, too, but maybe they do a little squeezing of her pocket-book.
