Chicka can I get a second opinion for a friend?

I gave her one of the puppies I had. She's friendly great with the family ect.... She was moving and had a friend take the pup to her new house. He put it in the back of the truck unsecured. She jumped out. She's eating and drinking fine but it tore her lip away from the bottom of her jaw (it's all there just not connected). Her jaw is fine it's just tissue separation.

The local vet says there's nothing that can be done about it. It is just cosmetic and the owner doesn't seem to care much other than the fact that she feels like an idiot every time she looks at it.

Is it really better to just leave it? I'm also questioning that they did not give her any antibiotic?

Hi.

Thanks for thinking that I could help. It *really* is hard to say without seeing the injury. How much is torn away? Is it, for example, from the little incisor teeth in the very front and goes back to the molars? Is it a rip along the jaw line and the lip is just hanging loose? Is the jaw bone exposed?

If the bone is exposed it has to be covered and protected with the skin!

If a large section of the lip is hanging loose (one end dangling in the wind and the rest is attached) then if it cannot be reattached then it should at least be removed. Hanging tissue is susceptible to more trauma, cause pain and potentially infections.

If it is a small tear then it may not be worth the anesthetic risk for a stitch or two.

If the tissue is pulled away from the jaw and forms a little pocket with the jaw, food, water and doggy drool could pool in there and cause lots of problems. If that is the case it would be best to reconnect and probably a drain would need to be placed for a few days so an abscess would not form.

If this is an older wound and the edges have healed ... if the lip is to be reattached then the wound edges can easily be freshened and the reattachment made.

Again, I have not seen this pup and the injury but I would think at least a short course of antibiotics would decrease infection setting in.

Depending on the extent of the injury, sometimes a surgical adhesive rather than stitches can be used to close the wound. Most anything can be repaired with reconstructive surgery. Can you post a picture or maybe ask your friend to have someone else look at the pup if she has any doubts about what vet#1 advised.

So many questions back at you. Sorry about that but I'd like to give the best "cyber vet" advice I can for the pup.

It looked to me like it is degloved to just past the canines. Totally hanging loose. No directly exposed bone there is still tissue over it. It has been about four days since it happened now. I just saw it yesterday.

Could be they're saying leave it because of her age and weight (I didn't think about that she's just a little over ten weeks).

I did think it looked bad enough for stuff to get into but I'm not a professional.

I'll ask her for some pics. The only thing that bugs me about leaving it is it's a two dog household. Dogs go for the face and throat area and with that hanging lip....

We live on 5 acres and our road is private but our deed restrictions clearly say NO ATVs. Are there no rules for your private road? Are you SURE it is legal for your kids to be riding where they are and that your kids never go on anyone else's property or make noise or disturb anyone? And what if your neighbors do tell you that they are bothered by the noise, will you tell your kids to stop or do you get special rights because your house is bigger? I would go insane if someone let their kids ride ATVs all around our neighborhood. We haven't even moved in yet and we already politely told some underaged kids that were riding dirt bikes through the neighborhood that that was NOT allowed (they stopped- if they hadn't, our other neighbors were going to get the police and let them sort out the issue). I am sorry but it is unfathomable to me that someone would allow their children to ride ATVS in a quiet country neighborhood repeatedly for hours and ON THE ROAD none-the-less. There is a vast, vast difference between dogs barking and chickens, which are expected and normal parts of country life, and a bunch of kids riding around on ATVs. Personally, I think your neighbors have showed remarkable restraint. There's something to be said for learning that there is a time and place for everything and for learning to respect the homes and lives of others. It is not your right to do as you wish when you live in a community of other people. If MANY other people in that community are bothered by behavior that only YOU are doing, which obviously is not appropriate for the environment, then you aren't being a good neighbor.

You guys are terrific, and I really appreciate your input. You have definitely helped me settle on grout the same color as the tile. So, to follow-up, yes the shelf I was thinking of was the Grundtal shelf, and yes, I was thinking I would install it so as to hide the brackets behind the tile, which is why I'd need to decide in advance. This one has separate rails that make up the shelf (see link). I was thinking a solid shelf might interfere too much with the venting and lights. I'm still not sold, and I hadn't thought that it could potentially look cheesy next to the range and hood. I think I'll go ahead and get one to check this out. I could always use it somewhere else in the house if it doesn't look good over the range. If I do decide to use the shelf, do you all think it should align with the bottom of the adjacent cabinets? The large pot in the photo is my tallest stock pot. Would that leave enough room to put things on the shelf and be able to lift pot lids comfortably? About the tile next to the window, I just checked and it looks like it's about 1.5-1.75 inches between the window and cabs. Do you really think that's too much of a sliver? I like them all - have looked at most of them myself. I ended up with the Tech Lighting Jayden Grande pendants in clear because when they brought one out from the back to show me I just fell in love with it. I actually didn't like it all that much online and I'm not generally a crystal girl, so I'd suggest seeing them in person if at all possible because it can really change your perspective. My take on #2 with re. to DH's concerns - I don't think the polished vs. stainless or brushed is a big issue, and the pattern would probably work since it isn't competing with anything. My thinking is that the light has a dainty/delicate feel with the flower design and I'm not sure how well dainty/delicate works with your kitchen. If it were geometric I'd probably be more comfortable with it, but that's just me. In some ways the flowers add a bit of the unexpected which is fun too. Of your other 4 options - I really like #1 and think it would look great, thought it looked very pretty in person too. They have it in clear with black wrapped around the inside white cylinder which would be pretty and pull in the black granite. #3 would really be a knockout especially if you end up with stainless in your tile. (I love the tile with stainless in it, by the way.) Another light I saw that I absolutely loved, and the sales guy called "sexy" which was an apt term, and would look awesome in your kitchen - was a jet black glass one. The glass was completely opaque - not just a dark smokey gray. As I recall the light didn't diffuse out the sides of that one. It stayed black when lit with the light just projected downward. It was gorgeous and would look stunning with your granite. It had the shape of the first pic in your "alternates" list and the Tech Lighting one badgergirl shows. Stunning but maybe not as much light as you are hoping for. So many fun things to select from out there! But too many choices can make it so hard. Good luck!
