Best orchids for zone 9a?

First off, I just wanted to say hello. I am new to orchids and am in the process of learning. I am lucky to have a job working in a place that specialized in tropical plants and orchids so I have access to all kinds of wonderful plants to try. I have learned so much already about how to care for them and between work and my own personal research I feel I am ready to take the plunge. I have recently collected quite a few phals, a dendrobium, a miltonia (or miltoniopsis, not sure which it is yet)a Maxillaria and an odontoglosom. Besides the odontoglosom these were all rescues.

I try and keep my apartment under 80 degree's and I mist the area's the plants are in 2 or 3 times a day. So far so good with everything except one of the miltonia's I overwatered and it rotted. Anyways, enough of my rambling, I am wondering if anyone could suggest species of orchids that would do well in zone 9a. I am sure I'm going to loose the cool growers this summer and I don't want to make that mistake again. We get long hot summers that range from high 70's to low 100's. And winters are cool and wet with frosts possible for a few months at night. Any suggestions would be great! Sorry for the long post. :)

In your apartment it is not zone 9a. It might be micro climate zone 10 out in my yard but it nothing like that in this room. It is an artificial climate that has some relationship to what happens outside the house but the extremes are muted.
Do you intend to place the orchids outside at any time during the year?
And where are you in the world?
As to the orchids that will thrive and bloom in your conditions, who knows! all you can do is try and see what happens.

I'm in Houston which is 9a and I grow my orchids outside most of the year. I have Catts, Schombos, encyclia, Oncidiums, Ansellia, Dendrobiums and Gramms that are all growing well for me.

Hello I graft my owns trees and sadly just fruits doesn't offer scions. The asians are on pyrus calleryana and are next to europeans on the same stock that are 3 years old and over 8ft tall with numerous braches and fruiting good. The asians are 6-7 years old 3.5 ft tall and have 0-2 branches. Most have never fruited although I did have one yakumo asian pear that was about 3' 10' tall with two branches at 5 years old and made about 100 blooms and I let set 50 that when ripe were the size of a milk dude. Although I'm using seedling stock for my pyrus calleryana and not clonal like the apple m111 I use; so each is gentically different. But I still have over 20 asians and some I have more than one of same variety. But all of them have not done anything other than leaf out for the past 3 years (other than the ones I graft which put on 7ft of growth the first year and then zip). Most are under 5 ft tall . Every one of the 30 europeans grow 100x better than the 25 or so asians I have (although some some euros my still be removed due to lack of growth, But not as the sole factor). Some asians are next to high chill apples (smokehouse, jonathon, winesap, hydeking, ashmeds kernel, newton pippin most listed needing as over 1000 hours of chill) the apples are 7-10ft tall and WELL branched and most have only been in the ground for 3 years or less. Apples grow GREAT, Most European pears grow GREAT, Plums grow good, most peaches grow good, but asian pears DO NOT grow for me.

It is raining cats & dogs & probably a few other pets here as well... I am soooooooooo grateful.... it was severely dry, I was trying to water with my tap water but after only 3 days everything is bone dry again...the clay earth was literally cracking up...now, the roots will have enough water for the coming winter...it is such a beautiful sound... And all the gypsum and potassium S. is going deep into the soil now. Now I will again add Potassium S, but no gypsum anymore for quite a while...I think I overdid that a bit... or what do you suggest Straw? should the gypsum and Potassium S. always be used together every time? Thanks so much for the great info... Tomorrow I will dust every rose with corn meal, seeing that they will probably still be damp by tomorrow evening ... and I am really happy to hear I don't need to add more chicken manure. I did that twice this season already... Khalid, did the rain take care of your Flying Super Ants? I noticed something when spring started here... the moment the temperature reached above 28C for the first time, all roses scorched. But as the summer grew hotter, it was as if they all started adapting, and only a few scorched...most became immune to the heat and only scorched above 35C... ps... The only time any of my roses have some disease, it is either due to bad circulation, or because I haven't given it water in the heat soon enough (then they get mildew in the rain), or when the dew starts at the end of summer, also during times when I haven't been giving it enough water... and, mostly to roses in full sun.

Khalid: Your Michelangelo is stunning & gorgeous color-blend. LOVE THAT !! Port Sunlight (deep orange) and Molineux (yellow/orange) are known to be LOW in thorns & smaller & compact bush with little scent. Golden Celebration is wider-spaced large thorns. http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=21.225184 If it has very large thorns but wider-spaced apart, and vigorous & big bush, it could be Crown Princess Mag. (medium fruity scent large climber with thick stem). Below is cluster of Crown Princess Mag. in June, I used sulfate of potash, resulting in cluster-blooming. Crown Princess starts deep orange-yellow, but fades to lighter yellow. But when I compare my CPM leaves to your "Golden Celebration", My CPM' leaf is bigger & darker & more elongated, versus roundish & smaller Golden Celebration or Teasing Georgia leaves. Bloom color changes, with high-phosphorus fertilizer or compost, blooms shift to the red-zone, resulting in apricot/orange, rather than yellow. Since I used sulfate of potash (high potassium) my CPM is yellowish, rather than deep orange. CAUTION: sulfate of potash, anything high in potassium tend to BLEACH blooms. One fall I put too much sulfate of potash on W.S. 2000 and the blooms became whitish, rather than deep red/purple. UP the potassium, you'll lower phosphorus (needed to shift bloom to red-zone). Yes, I understand that the immediate intention for the play area is not to install a play set. But it's coming eventually and do you want the planting scheme to do dual duty by working now and also be ready for the future without any major alterations? Or do you want to subject yourself to the possibility of making a lot of changes when a play set is installed? A year is NOT a long time. As the play area develops, it is divided from the planting area with a bed line. The bed line is something to be figured out now, on the plan (as information about the play set/area becomes known.) The bed line divides places where people could possibly walk ("floors": lawn, low groundcover, mulch-only) from places where they couldn't ("walls" & "furniture": shrubs, perennials and tall groundcovers.) Trees ("ceilings") could be located in either areas Another possibility with the pitts is to cut them down and do a total rejuvenation -- where you control/shape their re-growth (which will happen very quickly since they already have developed root systems) -- and trim them so as NOT to reach way out into the yard. Let them grow as a much narrower hedge which is later trimmed into tree forms and reaches and screens above the fence. Based on some of the prior discussion, I'm going to speculate that one potential problem that could come up is not devoting enough depth to the planting beds (that are likely to surround most of the yard.) In general terms, this bed(s) ought to be allowed 6' depth as an average minimum. There are usually instances where it can easily be deeper, and possibly some instances where it can be shrunk to 4' when sacrifices must be made. Plants require space and trying to maintain a bed that is too skinny/shallow is not only difficult & more demanding of maintenance, but it doesn't look very good either. Thanks for the responses. You make a good point about indoors not being the same climate as outside. I keep my temps indoors in the high 70's mostly but in the heat of the summer it sometimes slips into the 80's if I"m not careful about having the ac on all the time. Outside it has already started getting into the 90's and I have summer temps up into the 100's to look forward to. For me, I love it, my poor orchids, I am worried about. I just don't like the ac running all the time. It blows on me and makes me cold. Hehe. Anyways, as for growing outside, I will have to give some of those a go and see what happens. I may give one of the oncidiums a try, I have several of the same species so loosing one wouldn't hurt to bad. I will just have to monitor the temps and bring them in if it get's too hot/cold.

You cannot grow everything unless you have deep pockets and multiple growing houses.

So It gets to 100F now and then. Not so much of a problem for some orchids provided you can provide enough shade-cloth cover in summer.

Sunshine, particularly in winter is a plus.

Join the local orchid society and find out what types and the methods the locals use to grow their orchids.

Forget about those wimpy cloud forest orchids such as Odontoglossum and Miltoniopsis.

I'm in South Florida and grow many types of orchids outdoors. Being new to Florida, I think my zone is listed above as zone 9-10. It is hot and the sun very strong.

My plants have suffered sunburn and I have since moved some into shadier places and have installed shade cloth over my patio. I have most of my dendrobiums hanging in a tree which gets early morning sun. Catts seem to love the heat (so far), I have lost a few which didn't like the heat. I won't grow those again.

I have found Phals do fine until the day and night temps stay high. They seem prone to fungal problems and generally appear stressed as do the intergenerics. I move them into AC for a few months (still experimenting).

You state you work at a nursery. I would think you could get info for your growing area there. I would follow ArthurM's advice and join an orchid club. You will meet other growers from your area and learn what works and doesn't.

I'm thrilled to have moved from NY to Florida. My orchids seem happy and I'm getting growth I never got in NY. Even my indoor, dirt houseplants are thrilled being outside. They are growing like weeds.
