Name That Plant!

Plant or Weed? Got 5 here!

GardenWeb has been so useful as I experience my first year in Sonoma County. Hopefully I'll be able to help others with ID when I figure it all out. Here are 5 that I would be grateful for advice on.

Slide 1 - The plant to the right is masquerading as my spearmint on the left. What is the right one? I notice it's popping up all over the property so fear it is becoming invasive. May be something previous owners planted, not sure.

Slide 2 - I planted marigolds from seed. But these look like 2 different things. Is the back one a weed?

Slide 3 - Is the middle plant with the buds a marigold?

Is the plant to the right a weed?

Slide 4 - Useful groundcover or just weed? I have moss in other places which I prefer. So trying to figure out if should leave or take out.

Your post with pics: Hey! I have many plants growing on my property that i am curious about! Here they are: This one looks like a marigold, but I'm suspicious. Passionflower?? I hope so! I searched for hours on google looking for this plant to no avail... Looks like Yarrow, but it has 5 petals. This plant is practically EVERYWHERE around my property.. Any ideas? I must admit- I came home with more than I had planned to..... But less than what I came with! I still have many hours of home-work looking up information and germination requirements... I thought I was doing well with the two portable file containers I bought to store seeds in this year- one for swapping and one for sowing- but It is a bit of a mess still- shuffeling through all the "d's" for the right digitalis or datura or what ever- and I keep seeing a picture from a post where the gardener had purchased one of those plastic roll-away multi drawer systems. A drawer for sowing, with homemade dividers, all alpha filed- the bit larger drawer for swapping- and the big bottom drawer for seed cleaning, packaging, labeling tools, bubble mailers, postage and germinating info....... All in a single unit that can be easily tucked away when not in use- and organized and tidy when in use! Oh to be so organized!! I swear- every time I pull out the seeds- it is like an explosion throughout the whole area and then some! I do wonder what others do with the seed storage/swapping systems...... I have found a good software sysem for computer filing for seeds and things garden related and what have you- It is called NoteBook from Circus Ponies- It does work well for me- and maybe you too! I have about 5 acres of this devil's spawn. The plants aren't up yet, though. The frost kills it back but it comes back with a vengeance in about April. I know that it is supposed to be good for urinary problems, but this stuff is so invasive. I have a feeling that the Federal and local agricultural agencies would hang someone who dared to mail the seeds though, I'm not taking the chance. My suggestion to you is to come down to Central Florida and just walk around - you'll find bushels of it.

Before you invest more money for bigger solutions, consider how much time and money you have to actually be handling this. A good lawn is not just a 1-season job of doing something to make it look good. You may have to do something for 2-5 years before you see the result you want. Laying down sod for the entire yard is a fast option but if you aren't taking care of it, you just used a lot of money and will have similar issues again (just like you have described about your previous attempts) A non-grassy solution is that maybe you can turn your entire backyard into a kind of playground or xeriscape area for your kids. Rocks, mulch, pea pebbles, etc -- they will allow for your kids to be able to play in the yard, and for you to be able to spot unwanted plants quickly. Where you do want a particular group of plants, you can do a small bed, either in-ground or in a raised bed. But even at that, it's still something you'll have to maintain throughout the year, because unwanted plants have a way of blowing in through the wind, animals, or even popping up through landscape fabric. If you do have a rototiller already, it's still a good idea to use it to turn the weeds under if you don't want to pull them out first. After that, maintain the area by actively pulling out weeds. You can even make it a game with your kids. Even when I hand-pull weeds, the area I'm working in does get better without high cost of money, but it needs my continuous vigilance to keep it that way.

Oh dear - those are from the redbud tree? They are everywhere! Any idea how to keep this happening in the future? Not sure if it is those darn pods that I am always cleaning up that would sprout this. Yikes!

I will research the ones you mention. Others agree?

In pic 1 the plant to the right looks like the weed epilobium. Yank them out before they set seed! Thankfully, they are easy to remove.
In pic 2 are Saltcedar said, the back middle one is a marigold. So in pic 3 there is no marigold.
In pic 4, it is a weed. THsnkfully, they are easy to remove also.

One man's weed is another's flower.
Check the Zauschneria/Epilobium genera native to California.
Some are quite beautiful.

The ones you posted look nothing like the dinky, and I mean dinky, flowers of my weedy epilobium that makes tons of seeds every one of which germinates, lol.

That's why I try not to generalize about any plant or genus.
A given plant/genus may be Invasive, Insignificant or insect and
disease prone for someone but just the opposite for me.

Aha ... Well, we do tend to get a good breeze here every now and again so I am trying to control plants going to seed unless I really really REALLY like them. So sounds like I will pull all but the marigolds and the Anagalis. This is going to be a long morning ;-).

Does anybody out there have suggestions on how to prevent the little redbud seedlings next year? The searchbox doesn't seem to work this week for me.
