Name That Plant!

Thorny Bean Planting, no flowers. What is it?

Grown from seeds at our grandaughters preschool. Any ideas?Leaves have spines underneath, stems/stalks have many Sharp thorns. This specimen is multiple seeds growing multiple plants. All are less than 2 feet in height. No flowers or other growth noted.

I had the same problem. I notice that there are now some beans developing out of a cluster of flowers. I think it is the temperature too - believe it needs cool evenings for flowers to set, which in our area we had some cool evenings recently. I shall grow my beans later in the year so that in the fall I will have plenty of beans.

Definitely looks like a rose. Since you're in Zone 5, you might want to give it some winter protection, and see what you've got next spring. If you get blooms, but can't ID the plant, you could post photos to the Rose Forum. Probably it got killed back after such a harsh winter, but it's clearly a survivor. Nice find, Virginia

You could offer to do the work for them. Or ask it you can cut off the flower heads. If they say yes, you will be able to manage the problem so it will not affect your yard. The plant will probably flower again so make sure you have permission to cut them off each time.

Someone in another thread had mentioned people taking certain medications should not consume favas. Also, I know from another internet site I occasionally go to that some people have a genetically acquired inability to deal with favas, resulting in a rare but at times life-threatening anemia. Even the pollen can harm such people...but favas are also claimed to be helpful to people with Parkinson's disease! Here is a link that might be useful: Most informative link I could find

I should add, this growth was from planting some beans. In 12 months it has profuced nothing but thorns and foliage as shown. The underside of the leaves are lightly thorny. It has grown to a maximum of 18 to 24 inches from soil to highest point. This is from planting multiple seeds/beans.

I'd second Erythrina, and if you sowed a bunch of seeds in one spot, that's what you'd get.
They are a small to medium sized tree, a variety of flower shapes, some evergreen and some deciduous. The thorniness is a put-off for a residential yard.
If you check out scrolling through the link below you will see there are a variety of seed colours not all are red, many look very much like a bean. The tree is leguminous.

Erythrina acanthocarpa - Tambookie Thorn
An interesting small Coral Tree from South Africa. From a swollen basal caudex arises thorny stems that only grow to 3 to 5 feet tall. The leaves of Tambookie Thorn are composed of three bluish-green leaflets. In the spring, red flowers with greenish yellow tips bloom on 6 inch long spikes. Plant in full sun, water deeply and infrequently. A good plant for the a succulent garden or in a large pot where the large base can be observed.

The leaves look similar to both Erythrina herbacea and Erythrina poeppigiana. Maybe you can add a clearer photo?
