Them's serious birds!!! And when the young get old enough to demand....very very noisy!
I hear wren's almost constantly....but I don't know where the nest is....

This reminded me to check in on the Barn Owls----they are GORGEOUS---HUGE! Their Mom and Dad have done a great job---I feel so humbled....

If you haven't checked the red-tails, take a look today. They are getting HUGE and will proably fledge within the week. One has been exploring the ledge near the nest and there's a lot of wing-flapping and little lift-offs going on. They are so ready to take on Philly!

They are about ready to fledge. Not far from us a couple of houses are under siege. A pair of red-tailed hawks build a nest in a tree right next to the deck. Not only does the deck get pretty messy, the owners of the house cannot use it, their next door neighbor had a vegetable garden and can't tend it and if they go out the front door, they have to defend themselves with rakes or anything else long, in order to get to the mailbox. They had the problem last year, were allowed to take down the nest after the chicks had left, but they rebuilt this year. They were advised to take down the tree.

The owls have left the nest, the loon in Minnesota is still sitting on her eggs and the storks in Germany lost the last baby to hatch, but four was a bit much to raise, even three are hard to feed.

A couple of Blue Jays think I am their foster mother and beg every time I go out. Young squirrels were also told to stay here and since 3 days a racoon spends his days sleeping in the big oak. Not to forget the Cardinal who sits twice a day on a dogwood branch next to the backdoor and sings for his peanut. How am I supposed to get any work done?

Thanks Pidge, fun to watch the young ones. Missy got involved in watching the bald eagles in Canada a few years ago and made some friends on that web site. When they closed it after the birds flew her friends wanted to keep in touch so I made a forum for them. They still get on and chat at least once a week.

We have a lot of Red Tails around here and a couple of my customers have nests in their trees. Have also been close to Barn Owls, Kestrels, Coopers and many others. Some of the cutest were small white burrowing owls all lined up on a fence following every move I made. Their heads turned in unison. I once started to climb a big Cedar tree in Claremont and saw a Great Horned Owl roosting above me. We delayed that job till the bird was gone for a while.

Re-establishing the Bald Eagles has been a successful project but in our area we have nearly too many. They gulp up our baby loons and we haven't seen babies now for several years. I wonder if we could teach them to eat more fish and less loons?
