I hit the Milk Glass & Noritake mother-load!

Well, today, I hit the mother-load, big time!

I ended up with 30 pieces of milk glass and it was all half off!!!

I also got an entire set of Noritake dishes, that I have no idea what I'm going to do with, for $15! Apparently thrift stores have some good Memorial Day sales. Who knew?!?

Anyway, just had to share some photos of my haul!

This is my original haul of the day. 7 pieces, not too shabby. (Those ones leaning on the back wall are the dirty ones I'm trying to clean, the the day before yesterday)

I thought the pitcher would be good to have just ice water or lemonade or something in, for the wedding.

These two are my favorites of these 7 pieces:

At the same thrift store (Salvation Army) I also saw a whole huge set (I think at least 5 place settings!) of some really pretty Noritake dishes. But they were marked $29 and I didn't want to spend that, so I didn't even take them out to look out. But then I got to the register and the girl said that everything with a white tag was half off. Then a lightbulb went off, and I realized that the Noritake had a white tag!!! So, I asked, and sure enough, it was half off. So I got all of it for $15. I just looked it up on Replacements.com and a 5 piece place setting of this pattern is $39 on there. So I've probaly got at least $160 of dishes for $15. I'm so excited!

Then I went ahead and went to another thrift store, and seriously hit the mother-load. This is my basket (I took a photo in the middle of the thrift store... an old lady looked at my like I was insane... which I might be! lol)

I think the poor cashier might have had a stroke when she saw what was in my basket. She had to call in reinforcements, to help wrap everything in newspaper. LOL

So, now I have a crap ton of milk glass. My plan is to sell the pieces I have several of, or don't like, after the wedding. I've already called Keith and told him he better start on a display case soon though, because I'm probably going to end up keeping a lot of it. LOL

I also now have 3 different china patterns and have registered for some Fiestaware. I told him we can use the Noritake until we (if we) get our Fiestaware and then he'll have to have that display case finished, so I can take the rest of the milk glass out of my china cabinet, and put the new stuff in there. He might be better off to just go ahead and start building an addition. LMAO

Don't you LOVE thrift stores!

I can't think of a better source for china - this way you need never worry if you need to throw plates at each other's heads (my ex-SIL did that once to her husband. Amazingly they are still married).

I love charity shops! I used to haul two empty suitcases to England with me when I'd visit my DD and SIL. Then the day after I arrived, I'd head to the charity shop in the village and buy a wardrobe for a few pounds......wear it two weeks, launder it and donate it back. Then pack my suitcases with goodies to bring back. Who needs to travel with clothes?

Speaking of throwing things at a spouse. I once tossed a pizza at my ex-husband. The thing flew like a frisbee, grazed him and hit my nice painted wall. I wish you could have seen his eyes. Total fear. LOL. Waste of a good pepperoni, double cheese pizza however.

"He cries to be held all the time, and will only nap in my arms or in the bjourn. How do I fix that?" What's to fix?! This is biologically normal infant behavior! Follow his cues & and you'll both be swimming in milk. Seriously. Nothing increases milk more quickly than staying skin-to-skin and nursing frequently & effectively. One rule of thumb is not to put a willing baby down to pick up a pump! Babies are way cuter than pumps and stimulate milk-making in ways well beyond the engineering capabilities of mere mechanical beasts. If your son nurses frequently (every hour or so if he's interested & you're okay with it), satisfies his suckling instincts at the breast (as opposed to a piece of silicone), and falls blissfully asleep after nursing, you'll have tons of milk. Drink to thirst but don't force yourself to drink more than you want as that's counterproductive. Just don't let yourself "feel" thirsty or you've gone too far. As for sleeping through the night, it's not biologically normal at this age, all "training" books aside. On the other hand, it would be great to find ways you can sleep while nursing, nap by day, encourage his long sleep cycles at night, etc. It's important that you get rest, even if you are gently interrupted by some night nursing. The trick is to minimize the "interruption." As for your math re pumping: If you're getting the same amount each time, while adding pumping, that's an increase! And your first post indicates a lot of milk! Maybe your baby isn't crying for milk, maybe he's crying for you. The big picture is that breastfeeding is all about the relationship between mother and child, it's not a scheme for milk production. Your son wants you, and the more he gets you, the more milk flows between you. Consider new ways you and your son can rest and be together happily. Prolactin levels are highest at night (when mothers typically get more sleep), probably because mothers through the ages made up for lost time nursing while sleeping. Maybe a baby sling will help you feel more mobile during the day when he wants you close but you're trying to putter around. Houseful is right that this time is fleeting -- even if it doesn't seem so at the moment. Surrendering yourself to the nursing and new ways to rest and sleep will pay you back big-time in the coming weeks and months. You won't always be this tired. For me it was tremendously helpful to surround myself with friends who were going through the same things. It normalizes everything and puts the time in perspective. Someday you'll have a lanky teenager on your hands, sweet but will he ever be this cuddly again, and smell so good?!

I don't remember having it myself although I may have when very young but I never liked milk and it did not agree with me so I did not have milk often. My grandfather always had a bowl of cooked rice with warm milk and a little butter and sugar every night after dinner as his desert. It was also served for breakfast a lot. Mom used to make us home made pudding on the stove when we were sick we loved it. And she made wonderful French toast but we called it egg bread or Pain Perdu. I loved pancakes made out of corn bread batter, they were one of my faves. Cooked in the big cast iron skillet, she would add just a little sugar to the batter to give them a light sweet taste and fry till crunchy. Man I have not had that since I was a kid.

The recipe as I originally received it can be found at the following post: http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/cooking/msg1109360423653.html The recipe as I made it yesterday is: Fiery Sweet Potatoes 6 medium sweet potatoes (peeled and cubed) 3 large carrots (peeled and sliced) 1 15oz can of Coconut milk 1/2 teaspoon of Red Thai Curry Paste (see note) 1 Tbsp olive oil 2 Tbsp Butter 1 Tbsp Brown Sugar Boil sweet potatoes until tender and mashable. At the same time heat oil in pan, and cook carrots, in oil stirring frequently, until carrots are browned and soften. Place sweet potatoes, drain them, add curry paste and coconut milk, and mash lightly. Place in glass baking dish. Top with carrots, brown sugar, and butter. (You can set it aside and refrigerate it at this point) Bake until hot. (375 deg F 20 minutes) Note: The original recipe calls for 1 TBsp of curry paste. It must be a different brand of curry paste. With the brand I use that much would render the dish too hot to eat.

Hits: -New jute LR rug, it pulled the room together far better than expected and bonus points for being super-soft. Have to watch out for lounging felines when we walk through because cats evidently think it is a 9x12 cat Tem(purrrr)pedic and are ALWAYS stretched out somewhere on it -New recliners; they not only are totally comfortable but look so elegant and NOT reclinerish. Love, love, love them. Bonus points that I can at long last have cream chenille upholstery on LR furniture, woohoo. Although I have had sheets of aluminum foil on the seats for several weeks since the cats seem to migrate from the rug to the chairs if I let 'em -(Stolen from someone else) My holiday decorating this year was gorgeous, at least in my eyes :). Found some beautiful holiday pillows on sale at Pier 1, some lovely wreaths, all in my color scheme and everything appeared so festive . My sister told me that my niece said 'mom, the tree looks like it came out of a magazine'. The cats had no interest in the tree,they were sacked out on the jute rug Misses: -Huge expensive miss on new dining room table and chairs. Ethan Allen stuff and expensive enough that I just cannot get rid of 'em immediatly but I misjudged horribly on size. The table is far too large for the space and now I don't even have room for a tiny table or buffet. The chairs are bulky and pretty darned uncomfortable to boot. I made the mistake of buying for max capacity (holiday gatherings, annual club dinner at my home) without really thinking through the reality that 99.999% of the time the only people dining at home are my husband and me. Really, it's like that scene from Citizen Kane every night, him at one end and me waaaaaaaaay at the other. Luckily whichever one of the cats that has roused herself from the jute rug usually sits on an empty chair with her cat head poking up, so at least we've got a bit of visual comic relief -Still have several rooms of shame, including my son's room, the florida room and our office. I have a long standing goal of decluttering which didn't happen once again in 2014. However 2015 is looking promising: son is living with girl friend, daughter is moving out and I hope to get rid of miscellaneous extra furniture plus REALLY get in and toss out lots of detritus. Ive never noticed how pretty Milk Glass is and in a large grouping its very pretty. I think it will look lovely in a display cabinet.
LOL Suzi...i hit DH over the head with a Polish sausage years ago...it didnt break up like a pizza would but it did serve to get my point across.

Tisha, what great stuff you bought! Maybe enough vases not to continue trying to clean the cruddy one? Of course, now it's become a challenge and you may not want to stop till you've tried all the many remedies offered. :>)

Smart girl!

Heloise always says "vinegar" to tough cleaning problems.

seems like she says to fill the sink or dishpan with hot water & add vinegar & let the problem dish sit overnight.

I do love that hobnail pitcher for serving at your wedding.

Fantastic finds, Tisha, a collector's dream. I hit a flea market last week and found 4' of gold bar chain (for jewelry) for $1, and an American Girl carrying case (for a granddaughter) for $8. Love those finds!

Years ago, the mother of a boy I was dating told me about the first breakfast she prepared for her career military husband.

She was an "owl" rather than a "lark", & she had been pampered her whole life anyway.

so the honeymoon was romantic, & then the newly-married couple moved into base housing, & New Husband had to get up at 5 AM to get to work.

New Wife gamely gets up, too, puts on her beautiful negligee, & goes to the kitchen to make pancakes.

& sits down at the table & dozes off, waking up only when the odor of burning pancakes seeps into her brain.

As she's frantically trying to salvage the pan & fan away the smoke her dearly beloved appears in the kitchen doorway, guffaws, & chuckles, "Ah, the new bride in the kitchen."

& turns around to leave.

She said, "The sight of that smug neck retreating just *enraged* me, & I had a pancake sitting on the egg turner in my hand,so I flipped that pancake across the room, & it hit him smack on the neck & slid down onto his starched collar."

Well, after the long weekend of thrift store scrounging, I've got a total of 73 pieces of milk glass. Now, maybe 9 or so of those were ones I already had. But the rest are all new. I already know that I'm going to end up wanting to keep the majority of it, instead of selling it after the wedding.
