please help newbie w/this very grand orchid in trouble!!

please, if you can spare some thoughts i'd very much appreciate it. i'm visiting from the building forums.

a friend gave me this orchid after my mom passed seven weeks ago. since then the remainder of the buds have managed to flower (nine or ten) so things were going well.

...until i over watered. the leaves drooped so i let her dry out a bit. perhaps too much as evident by the dead, yellow leaf at bottom. i now water only when soil is beginning to dry out and the leaves have perked up. but they are not looking good. i searched the forum and i suspect it might be mites. can anyone confirm?

about the dead leaf: do i just cut it off? from what point?

there seems to be new growth at that same point. is this a stem that will flower or a branch, or what? do i need to do anything with this; train it upwards with a stalk?

thanks so much for any help. since this was given to me as condolences i would hate to harm it. i'd sooner give it away to someone who is better able to keep her healthy than leave her to die in my incapable hands... thanks so much.
