Killing flea beetles organically
Comments (2)Spinosad is known to be very harmful to bees and is not rated for Flea Beetles, and pyrethjrins are very broad spectrum poisons that will kill many beneficials if applied at the wrong time. "All Natural 3-in-1 Garden Insect Spray is a special mix of miticidal/insecticidal/fungicidal compounds blended to provide a broad-spectrum anti-respiration solution for total insect, mite and disease control." Broad spectrum means it kills many insects and mites including beneficials. Insecticidal soaps must contact the target insect and are not very effective against Flea Beetles anyway. Potassium Bicarbonate is a fungicide, not an insecticide. Neem products have an adverse affect on bees and is rated as a moderate, or category III, pesticide for bees and should only be applied early in the morning or evening when the bees are not active. Since Flea Beetles are not too fond of wet environments, they prefer dry, spraying plants mid day might be of some help. Garlic sprays are known to repel them as are hot pepper sprays. Start with the least toxic pesticide that will offer some control of your target pest, keeping in mind that not all will work against every pest and most all can be harmful to beneficials if not used with due care....See MoreKilling cover croporganically, no-till.
Comments (4)The entire point of a cover crop is to work it back into the soil to release whatever nutrients it might have accumulated. Pretty near impossible to do without at least hand tilling......... Just covering with some sort of mulch could work but only if you do not intend to plant the area this season. It will take time for the smothering to a) kill the plant and b) the plant actually begin to decompose. Tilling the soil of a vegetable garden annually is not necessarily a bad thing, provided you do not over-do it. Multiple passes with a rototiller tends to destroy soil structure and create layers of hardpan. An occasional hand tilling or a single pass with a mini tiller to work in amendments or cover crop will NOT produce the same detrimental effect....See MoreHow to organically kill a bed of ditchlillies?
Comments (6)Plse remember debra, 'One man's ceiling is another man's floor"!: we had lots of takers for our generic orange daylilies when we divested years ago. You ARE referring to daylilies, yes? Not the orange turk's cap lilies that spread via their large shiny round black seeds, right? craigslist free is my suggestion if daffodil doesn't want them all. we found that there are lots of mother's volunteer groups looking for plants for their kids' school yards, etc. I understand what you mean about the orange day lilies surviving all of us but if you have the energy, you might want to dig them and pile them w/ compost or dirt or branches on top of them for the winter- just to treat them better. (They're FLOWERS after all! They have FEELings!) p.s. in the future, if you want to kill an area of plants ( we have done this for years, with poison ivy, bishops weed)): cover the area with large pieces of heavy mil black plastic (thin trash bag weights tear too easily) avail. at most hardware stores, weight it down with heavy stones or cinderblocks etc. Leave it for ~ 6-12 months. Look under the plastic and see what you got; dig a bit and check as well. Continue as needed. If you are not organic-concerned, spray the plants w/ Roundup first and then cover. Easier to do in e. spring or late fall when plants show very little green. Some people wet thick layers of newspapers and put those down before the plastic, but My Love says that method leaves a mess of shreddy paper you have to deal with. best, mindy...See MoreWill beneficial nematodes kill all the micro organisms and bugs
