Modern Motor oils- a problem for small engines?

Guys,

I have been reading about how modern motor oils are the scourge of motorcycles and antique autos. It seems that the EPA requires modern motor oils to have reduced Zinc and phosphates because it fouls catalytic converters.

The reason that modern cars cope is due to the roller lifters that can tolerate this highest friction point without damage. A 1956 Ford, a lawn mower motor, for example or Harley V-Twin is not so equipped.

I get the feeling that using plain SL starburst motor oils may not be the wisest choice. Has anyone broached this topic here yet? This search engine is down tonight is why I ask. Know that some oils are made to address this problem such as racing oil.

I have read stories where flat tappet motors run on modern oils, had ruined cam lobes in a very short amount of time as a result.

I'd be curious how manufacturers feel about SL/SM oils.

Thanks,

QuickRick
