Doritaenopsis orchid?

Hello,

I am new to this forum, and tonight I did something I never do. I bought a houseplant at Home Depot,or to be more specific I bought a Doritaenopsis orchid. (sp?)I think that is what is called, but I need help. It was being cleared`out for 33% of it's original price, so I paid $8 for it. I have seen it before, and I just kept getting drawn back to it each time I was in the store. I know nothing about orchid care, so I have been scanning the FAQ's. I bought some Shultz Orchid mix to repot it in. The only tag it has on it says:

(Dtps. (Hsinton Rose x Taisuco Roseherz) x

Dtps. (Minho Princes x Taida Rose)) x Sibling

(...the word princess on the tag is only spelled with one "s", so I copied it exactly.)I think perhaps I am smitten with this orchid. I would appreciate any help, pointers etc. It has one stem with three blooms on it, and some fuzzy looking grey wormlike things at its base.

The orchid you bought is a cross between a Phalaenopsis (Phal) and a Doritis addreviated (Dtps). The grey worklike things neat the base is more than likely the roots. Doritis was removed from the Phal group of orchids and both are in the Vandaceous family. So they commonly have the aerial roots you see at the top the the pot. Care will be the same as Phalaenopsis type orhids. Having Doritis in the background may cause them to bloom a few times a year, Most pure Phal's bloom only once a year.

Hi, trish. Tab is correct-- treat your Dtps as a phal. Many Dtps have far more Phal in them than Doritis anyway.

The mystery of why your plant had so many leaves is solved! You have two plants growing. They look healthy, roots look good, one appears to be getting more light - size of leaf and color is lighter. Whether you separate them is up to you. I would leave them, increase light and hopefully you will get spikes this fall. I see you live in Oregon, it is possible the plants are not receiving enough light and you might want to supplement with a CFL bulb to increase your chance of spiking. Your plants should be making new leaves and roots over summer and with a temp drop in Sept. you should see spikes beginning. Jane

Thanks - I figured it was a slim chance to find out the actual name :) I would never water any plants with ice, never heard of such a ridiculous thing before. Like others I thought maybe there was some new weird type of orchid. In terms of those air roots, I'm not too crazy about them growing vertical, (due to a plastic bag around the plant), will they turn down at some point or can I trim them a bit? With the roots that have a dead portion on them, leave it be, trim the dead portion, or trim that entire root?

If you would like a plant out of bloom go to this page to get my email address and use "FREE ORCHID" as the subject. I will send you one that can be grown as a house plant and instructions for growing it. Seeds are a young person's game. It can take several years to get them to bloom and, as mentioned, are quite complex. Orchids send out millions of seeds to get a few started. Give me some idea which way your window faces and the climate. The easiest is buy one in bloom. IMO Trader Joe is the best local source if you have one. Our grocery stores have them too, along with Home Depot and others in the Big Box group. About $15 I think. Don't get your orchid from the bargain shelf, at least not your first plant.
