shellfish allergies and fertilizers

Hello everyone

My daughter-in-law is allergic to shellfish and now comes the problem. I bought fish emulsion to use on my vegetables and was going to buy some compost that is lobster compost and another compost that said it has mollucks(probably spelled wrong) in it. Can I use these if someone is allergic to shellfish? I wondered if someone else has had this problem I would appreciate any advice you have

what is the actual chemical in shellfish that results in the allergy?

I doubt fish emulsion would cause problems as it's fish, not shellfish used in the processing, but the compost I really can't say.

There are people so allergic to something they will go in to anaphlactic shock just by being in the same room and breathing the substance that triggers the reaction. Anaphlaxis is a life threatening emergency because it causes a persons respiratory system to swell shut and they cannot breath.
While I doubt that the foods grown with that "fertilizer" would absorb the allergin (my medical sources have not confirmed that however), you would need to be carefull, I'd think, spraying that around when your daughter in law is present, especially if just smelling the allergin is enough to trigger a reaction.

Takadi, I sing the praises of shredding till I'm hoarseÂnothing like it. But then I'm a real fanatic, almost to the point that the process of composting has become an end in itself. I had a terrific Kemp shredder that I babied for years, but when it was no longer repairable I blew a wad on a MacKissic Mighty Mac. Very pricey, but worth every penny, IMHO, especially for a guy who values a chipper-shredder over, say, a new car or a fun vacation somewhere. -- GaryStPaul

Shellfish allergies are no joke. This is the one allergen that is " Adult onset". I grew up on the ocean; and have eaten lots of shrimp. In 2005 I had my first reaction to shellfish. After 2 bites, my throat started to close up. Last night 2018 was my last exposure; and it was more severe. It was cross contamination. I had a steak where a lot of shrimp was on the menu. My steak was cooked where shrimp was cooked. I was in the ER within an hour of exposure via 911 ambulance. Vomiting, sweating out of every pore and blacked out twice. Once hitting a wall so hard everything fell off and broke on the opposite side. The EMTs kept asking me if I have been drinking.... None of my family told them I just ate at a local restaurant and had a severe shellfish allergy. I could not communicate this as I was in and out of consciousness. I am now going to an allergist, getting a medical alert bracelet and an epipen. I guess my family was too freaked to communicate what was going on.

This might not be as scary as it sounds. Here are the guidelines from the FDA site. My ears perked up with this as I do have a shellfish allergy. From what I understand, the reactions was from people with severe allergies, and they were treated and fine. I will make sure to declare my allergies when I get the shot. I have not had any reactions to other vaccines (I got hep A and B vaccines last year, and had no issues) I used to eat shellfish and then one time about 25 years ago, after eating shrimp I broke out in crazy hives. I had no idea what was going on, as the hives came out a day after and kept going. I had never had this reaction before and actually thought maybe it was chicken pox. It was very uncomfortable, but no issues with breathing. I was tested later on and confirmed that I am allergic to shellfish. So of course, I avoid it . I have no problem if someone at the table is eating it as long as I don't.

thank you for your advice. I ended up calling the company that makes it and they told me there is absolutely no shellfish in the fish emulsion.

I’m also wondering about sea compost that says it has shrimp in it and I have an anaphylactic reaction to shrimp and scallops...just wondering if it changes the allergin -such as iodine -in the composting process....

ALL fish emulsions contain no shellfish. They are a byproduct of the fish oil and fish meal industry.....essentially recycling a waste product. No shellfish are included in this process. They are too valuable for that sort of processing.
