darcie--based on gardengranma's response, I think I know what plant you are talking about. It is a close relative of wood poppy (celandine poppy). I'll let you know if I come across the name. I realize I can do a better job of describing my plant. The heart-shaped leaves all come from a single point in the clump and the flower stalk comes up from the same point. Each stalk has a number of yellow daisy-like flowers on it. I guess I'll keep searching for images.

The deeply cleft petals reminds me of one of the Epilobium sp. (Fireweed). CalPhotos should have photos of all the native ones. Check the link for the Sierra species. Rb Here is a link that might be useful: Epilobium obcordata

I don't know. It's a wild flower and grows to be about 3' tall. I looked at the Georgia wild flower website and saw some very similar flowers but the leaves were different. My son-in-law grabbed some seed last fall while deer hunting and we planted them. Both his and mine came up and were just beautiful before the cold got them.

So, how do we tell now which ones are sterile (besides the double flowered kinds), and which are fertile? I've driven by a mature RoS in my area for years. It is a gorgeous mauvy purple, and is growing on the remote end of a double lot that doesn't get tended or mowed. I have never seen any offspring overtaking the property. It has to be at least 20 years old. Personally, I wouldn't mind seedlings. Especially if they breed true, as Martie mentions. I'd love to pot them up and share them at swaps, pot them as outdoor container plants, and try RoS bonsai. :) Now, if only the weed Norway maple in my side garden were sterile! Confidential to Martie: I went foraging through my viburnums last week, and the darned things were sending up whips like crazy. You're right - they aren't caners. I thought that the V. opulum/triloba was caning, but it was in fact sending a whip from the very base of the main trunk. Looks like I'm going to be spending the winter reviewing my Michael Dirr books. I guess I always thought of them as caning because the whips are long and prominent greenwood, and you can prune them back hard like canes. Anyway, I retract my grouping of viburnums! Sub in Nikko Blue hydrangeas instead. I spent last spring lopping back zillions of dead canes.lol
