Comments (6)Saxman, I would be inclined to agree with Bill on the air filter. GC filters do a better job of filtering then most brands. It will intercahnge with the Brigg Quantum Power filter size wise and the brigs will last much longer, but will allow dirt to pass. The GC filter is a sorta lime green. The very outer rim will remain the original color most times and when the rest of entry side has any discoloration it is time to replace. They will richen up the fuel mix very quickly once going off color and foul the plug. They won't be all packed in with crud, just off color because they stop all dirt from passing. You can trade engine life while gaining filter and plug time by using the Briggs filter but the Honda filter is no more if not actually less to purchase so I would advise to just replace them more often....See MoreBriggs & Stratton Black Smoke Gas Smell
Comments (8)Weed cutter, The model number is 10A902. I didn't run something over, I actually hit up against a fench. It wasn't too hard but enough to knock the screw loose that holds the gas tank, filter and primer section off. I thought that all I needed to do was line up the tubes and screw it back in, but it hasn't worked since. I am not sure about the choke, I know that the throttle is preset so I cannot speed it up or slow it down. I don't think I can adjust the choke? Under the front of the motor where the spark plug connects it was wet from some gas and smelled of gas odor. I don't want to take it down to have it fixed if it is going to cost too much, but I don't much about fixing engines so I don't know what it is supposed to look like. Thanks for the help! Comments (7)i removed about 2 oz of oil to make sure it wasn't that stupid. dad didn't seem concerned about that saying it was an insignificant amount. difficult to get an accurate read on the oil level due to the stupid plastic dipstick design but it seems at the correct level. i probably should stick a screwdriver in it to get an accurate read, but like i said, it isn't over-filled oil. i know the symptoms of too much oil -- heavy black smoke and very erratic performance. this is a slight black smoke, excessive fuel consumption (rich burn, burning fuel 4 times faster than it should), slight erratic performance, and degraded rpm. new spark plug was installed and gapped to 0.76mm (factory gap was actually correct). removal of air filter was tested. it is a new air filter replaced 2-3 weeks ago and frequently dusted -- i also typically use a very porous 2ndary filter (similiar to the filling of a comforter) as well to keep larger stuff off the air filter. it isn't those things. i've used new gas from two different sources. i've thoroughly cleaned and checked the carb (needle valve was perfectly clean like brand new and functioning correctly with the floater, the bulb was perfectly clean like brand new except of course with clean gas in it), everything looks good, and really, there isn't much that could go wrong with the carb with everyday use, unless i was burning sand and sludge. i also examined and cleaned the breather and it looked in good condition. the breather was clean except for the expected oil and functioning perfectly. i'm really just asking for advice on what to expect for tearing down the engine, if there is anything special that i need to know. my dad thinks it ran hot with the choke getting stuck and not releasing fully. it is likely internal to the engine. hopefully, it is just a worn belt considering 500 hours (5-10 years of residential use) is about the life of a residential mower engine, but i may have to replace rings and hone the cylinders if it was because of the automatic choke release being used and not releasing even though the lever was fully released due to dirt build-up around the linkage for it. everything else was just fyi to give my review and experience with the craftsman mower and honda engine....See MoreSpark Plug All Crudded Up
Comments (8)I checked my compression today and it read 105psi. I am not sure what the factory spec is, but it seems like a reasonably good number for ignition. I am wondering if burning oil simply gunks up spark plugs and perhaps I may need to change them more often. Another thought I had was that this new syn.oil I put in this season is removing the old sludge from the conventional oil of other seasons, and it is ending up on my spark plug. Other than burning oil and gunking up the spark plug (the plug never fouled by the way) the machine seems to run fine. I am just concerned that something else might be wrong, causing bigger problems. It was a pretty gunked up plug for one season's use. If anyone else has some thoughts or some test I can run or something I should check, I would appreciate the suggestions....See Morebluemower
