Vanda growing a new plant instead of flower stalks

I bought a large Vanda about 5 years ago. It has always bloomed twice a year. No fertilizers. This spring what I thought was a new bloom has turned out to be another version of itself.

The old plant is still producing leaves, and the entire root structure is about 2 and 1/2 feet long.

Is there anything I should be doing?

Congratulate yourself on having a healthy robust plant. In a couple of years you have the option of dividing the plant.

I like to keep my vandas together. I never seperate. In a few years, it will put on a nice show possibly blooming at the same time or one after the other.

Congrats on getting your phals to spike. That's a lot of good growing, and you should feel smug about it :). As to the single flower: Flowers on a phal spike do open one at a time. So it may be just the normal opening. Look real close at the tip of the spike: is there a little tight roundish tip? That tip often lengthens and forms additional buds, which will open while the 1st flower is still on. However, that's not the only possible scenario: it could be it's a newish plant and one flower is all it has strength for. I've had that a couple of times. In that case, be patient and your next blooming should be a lot bigger. It could be, depending on the genetics, one of those summer-bloomers that keeps developing one flower at a time over a long period of time. I've had this, too. So I would say, enjoy your flower and take it as a sign you are doing things right. Be a little patient and you may still get lots more flowers. Be a lot patient and you will get another spike with more flowers next year. As long as your phals are getting good light and put out new leaves regularly, you'll get lots of flowers from them Enjoy

Many of my more tender rhodie varieties had killed buds this winter. OP's profile, though, says they are in the UK, which didn't see a particularly hard winter. OTOH their foliar hardiness was generally good, which seems to indicate that the rhodie community is generally realistic in their hardiness assessments. For example: Gardenia 'Kleim's Hardy' has been marketed as zone 7 hardy for well over a decade. This year a large bush in a sheltered spot was completedly killed to the ground and is returning only weakly from the roots. OTOH, 'Captain Jack', which is my favorite red, did lose its buds, but had completely intact foliage, even though it isn't in a very sheltered spot. I did lose an unusual lepidote hybrid involving the maddenii series, but it was only rated as hardy to 10F and I had backup plants in pots. In the succulent world new rosettes forming on inflorescenses are called bulbils. They are common in Gasteria and Haworthia. Some agave do this like crazy. Usually they can be left on for some time until they get quite large. It is best to leave them where they are until it obvious that they are no longer recieving water through the desiccating inflorescense. They will start forming roots and that is the time to take them. When removed early they may have insufficient water stores to survive until roots form. Brad

That's good news! I moved the plant away from the wall where the creeping fig vine is, as I thought perhaps some of the dirt accumulated from the vine. Also, I want the plant to have more even light, so that the flower stalk will grow up straight.

I agree, I actually meant to discourage early division if at all. Multiple blooms can be very attractive.

please share your secrets on what you did to cause this to happen.?? I've had it happen but making it happen is another story. I have Vandas pushing 7 feet and would sure be nice to have more plants rather than more height!!!
So ungainly and prone to wind damage when they get too tall. I"ve tried clipping out the growing tip but usually results in a hunch back lol New growth just starting to the side of the clip and then resuming it's attempt to get even taller
Would LOVE to be able to cause offsets.!! The worst IME are the strap leaf .Teretes or hybrids between being the easiest to prune to size so you get more plants
Why in the world wouldn't you want it to offset??? They also flower and produce roots so result in a MUCH fuller, robust plant.
