Goin' rock hunting

I've been watching those "Cash and Treasures" shows for years, always on the lookout for places to find gemstones. Heck, who cares if they're even gems -- I want to find pretty rocks. I thought it would make such a perfect girls only trip, but all my "girls" have wimped out on me. I think their excuses are feeble -- baby due in June, live on the other side of the country, need to work -- that sort of weak stuff, so DH and I are heading out next month to North Carolina and northern Georgia to hit some of the spots mentioned on the TV shows. We can't leave the critters here for more than a few days, so it will be a quick trip.

When the grandsons are a couple of years older, I plan to take them to the diamond mine in Arkansas -- that's on the way to taking them home to Texas after they visit us in Illinois. At 5 and 6 I'm not too sure how thrilled they would be to do that now.

Rubies, sapphires, aquamarines, emeralds and just plain pretty rocks, here I come. Have any of you done something like this? Any suggestions? I'd prefer not to kill myself in the name of rock hunting.

I've taken the Yankee cousins to some of the places over in the mountains.
It was fun.
We found some rubies etc. Just small ones.

Kids love to do this.
The older ones anyway.

i just got this great pebble mosaic book, and there are such beautiful things in there i would love to make some..i'd like to do a walkway..

Thank you all for the replies and the reassurances! Now I realize I have a wheel barrow full of suitable crushed granite :) One thing, though, will the crushed granite still be okay with everything 1/8" and smaller sifted out? Should I amend with a little more Turface to balance out the increased drainage? I suspect the crushed granite is still good from what I know about gritty mix, just want to make sure. @Al - I hope your recovery is swift and complete. Thank you for your help. Not just here, I've learned so much in such little time reading your many posts. @simonk - Lyngso is indeed the place a tried, a lead I got from the Regional Supplies thread. I'll keep that max size of 3/8" in mind! @robertbay - If you are around San Jose, check out U-Save Rockery. They have crushed granite that is the same grit as Lyngso's Desert Gold. The plus, though, is that it doesn't have nearly as much dirt and debris encrusted. I only went to Lyngso because I visited U-Save Rockery and thought Lyngso's crushed granite would be smaller. I don't think I need the $200 investment into an eco-shredder :) I will keep EB Stone in mind though, thanks!

I don't even get a chance. Literally every night at 8:30 pm like clockwork the toad patrol comes out, always within 30 minutes of that time, and they hope into my pots, up on my patio, and they get fat and happy. I've watched them hop up my steps to get onto the deck, 3 deck dwellers, made me laugh really hard when I first saw them use the stairs, but I guess I never thought about how they got up there before. "Only could fill TWO", Jeanne? You better go shopping, Girl. You're way behind it sounds. LOL. Punk, that looks like the same tall apothecary jar I just fell in love with on that site! And yes, I ordered it. But...I didn't get any of the little twig balls. ;o( I checked shipping on the tall jar, and it was $9. Well I figured getting some of the twig balls probably wouldn't up it any. HA! I added ONE pack to the cart and checked the shipping...it went up to $16. NO way. So I passed on the balls for now. I'll just watch for the mix like you got locally. I did find some in Easter colors last year that I bought, at Walmart. hugs, Karen

I have hunted muzzleloading season with a 50 cal. Lyman now for about 5 years and this is only the second time I have had a misfire. Pretty good in my estimate here in the humid, steamy south. Besides we had a misty rain first thing in the morning that day so it was probably my fault for not "keeping my powder dry!" ha-ha! I actually like bow and muzzleloading seasons here because most people don't bother to hunt them and the woods are much quieter before the general gun people hit the woods with their dogs and atvs. The south seems to have more than our fair share of "lazy hunters" who's idea of hunting is seeing how close to their stand they can drive or dumping a bunch of dogs out to push game to them. Jan remember that baby we found out was on the way when we were on a GP get together? He'll be 5 in June.

Where did you go for gem hunting? Can you tell me some stuff you ran into?

Making a mosiac out of found rocks sounds like a wonderful idea! Thanks for that suggestion.

Nora, you can find all kinds of places in the Sherpa guide.
Sheffields is the one that is shown on the Travel Channel.
We went to Dahlonega it has some places and it's a nice
little mountain town. Gold was discovered there and they
have a little museum on the town square.. We took the cousins to another place
that a friend told us about but I can't remember the name.
I've never been to Sheffields

Most of the mines have people who go in and bring out
buckets of dirt for you. They have places for you to sit
and look through the dirt.

We found some Rubies and Garnets.
If you've never done this before you'll have fun.
Some folks are really into it and have the rock tumblers and everything.

There is a world class museum ( The Weinman Rock and
Mineral Museum) just south of here if you are interested in
that sort of thing. It is wonderful.
Google it and some of the places in North Georgia and in
and around Franklin NC.

I can't believe it has been so long since we were in
Kentucky. What a trip that turned out to be. It was the
first time I had met anyone from the GP in person. It was such fun.
