a few show photos, and what came home with me

I went to the Philadelphia Flower Show earlier this week. It seems I've made it a tradition; this is my third year in a row I've gone. This year, I decided to bring along my camera. I saw a lot of nice orchids (among a lot of other fun things; one of my other favs were succulents...) I didn't take a lot of photos, because I wanted to take it in rather than try to record it, but I thought I'd share the orchids I did photograph.

This very lovely Aerangis citrata. I wanted a photo of what to aspire to with my own : )

Blooms on a very large Den. kingianum. I should've just taken a pic of the whole plant anyway, but trying to get all of it in a photo and not run into people was annoying me, so I just got the closeup:

This came home with me, by request of my roommate:

And this one was for me. I first saw it on Oak Hill's site, and then started noticing it showing up at places like Whole Foods. I decided if I saw one at the show, it was mine. I love the spotting on it.

So, that's all that's orchid related. I was hoping to find something on my wish list besides the Dtps, but it was not to be. Oh well, there's always the show at Longwood Gardens! I've never gone yet (something about not having a car and not knowing anyone with a car who'd want to go) but I think I just might get the chance this year!

Amazing citrata - glad you managed to get one. Does it live up to it's name in fragrance?

Those phals are intense....I remember when I first started seeing these appear. Incredible.

Ha ha, I wish. No, that was a show citrata, given an award (don't remember which place). I took a pic of it to remind myself what they can be. I've had a citrata for a while, and it's doing great now. But it had its struggles. My citrata is what started the whole 'building my acrylic case' endeavor, and my very first ang.

Wish I could've smelled that citrata, but it was set back a little far for me to lean over properly and try to smell it without feeling like I was going to fall into the display pit. Still waiting for mine to bloom. The spike looks like it's growing, but not super fast. Maybe it stalled? It's sending out a new root and keeps putting out new leaves. Oh well.

luvs - Here's a couple pics from our 1st FM this year...my old quilts wouldn't even staying hanging down on the tables...and my cards were blowing away out of the boxes so I put them away! Yikes! Here's DH wondering what the heck we're doing...but we learned & it improved! Never can count on Ia. weather. Last summer we did a trail couple times & decided we'd give it a go...and I retired also. So we had fun. But you can see some of the fun stuff we make tog. & my DH does alot on his own, too. We enjoy. Log bdhs, Mission bdhs, folkart, I made the rd ones from the porch columns I salvaged at a farm (they were newer & split in 2 lengthwise)...so I got to make lots of those...sure you've seen...and also shutter bdhses, my DH helped me (or maybe vice-versa, barn doors I have fun with...anyway, a great time! Our's is $60 for season or $75 if you get a "shady spot." Of course, we haven't worked our way there yet. Pics not great...but you get the jest of it...Jeanne S. No Clue, you got some great pics and even documented them as you went along, well done! I think the wildfire logic is spot on. Rachel, I do think that pic is Christina, good call. I emailed John, he thinks the pinwheel'ish flower is Tangerine Dream, but he isn't 100% sure. He believes that particular tree is still there and will let me know tomorrow. As for my mystery tree (thanks all for the compliments! I fell in love with the shape and I am so pleased to be rewarded with such lovely flowers!!)he needs more pics to identify, so I snapped a few more and will see what he says. Really it doesn't matter what it is, but it is always nice to know a little something about your trees. I know I got a great deal whatever it is! It is 87* here today, HOT for us... the flowers are looking a little unhappy in all this heat.

I dunno this is why i posted, i need to be set straight : D what ever it is, ill be happy to share some if it, i do enjoy it, neat, tidy, and beautifully marked, but i really want some big sans varieties! Mason congo, fisheri, stuckyi, i really dont know what others get monsterous in time, but that what im shootin for next. Im not sure but i fear its too late this year to do any mailing to the north tho, there always next spring tho. hopefully by then we all have some lovely new sans to swap around. Ive been poking around and all the links i find to cultural practices with golden hahnii lead me back here...

Plant looks great to me. You will always have a few leaves die on you. Looks like it could use more sunlight. Not direct but if indoors, a sunny window. Doesn't have to be but it will give you maximum looks and growth. I would water it more and don't let it set in water. During colder months, cut back on the watering. Sounds like you are doing everything right.

LOL my bad! Your case is paradise...I'm sure your angs will one day be as amazing as this one :) Apparently citrata spikes take quite a while to mature (ie over a month) or so I've heard!

I love your spotted phal!!! What is it's name? I'd love to order one from OHG, as they'll be coming to the show in Houston next month.

It's called Dtps. Chien Xen Pearl 'M-P0548'. At least, that's what the tag says. I've seen different spellings for Chien in the name, most commonly Chain instead of Chien, but other variations too. Mine seems to look spottier than the pic Oak Hill has up, but it clearly has the same pattern and other details. Also, my pic shows the blooms as pinker than it is in person, it has more of a lavender tint to the pink and the spots look more burgundy.

If you do get it, please let me know if you think it's fragrant. Oak Hill says it is, but my allergies are starting up (I think) and I can't tell.

I'm enjoying it. Hope you get one too!
