Hi Deb, There are varieties that have one large summer crop (june or summer-bearing), and varieties that have a long succession of fruit from spring through summer (ever-bearing) There are also varieties that shoot off runners, and those that don't. For my strawberry 'tree' I choose a non-running variety. if you're sharing a bed with other veggies, I would choose a non-running variety. If you have a place set aside for just strawberries. I would plant 4 to a foot based on my (limited) experience. The rest is pretty much like a veggie. (In my experience) Water it, but don't drown or dry it. I used the same fertilizer that I use as the base for my veggies (dynagrow brand foliage pro plus a little protekt) They grow really easy, but watch out for bugs when they plants are small (just like any veggie, again) just buy few plants and go for it! In what zone do you live? Regardless of type of strawberry it is best to take off the first buds (flowers) that bloom. This is so the roots establish themselves. How long ago did you plant them. Mrs. G

I once bought a single plant of 'Profumata di Tortona' back in the 1980s and it grew exactly as you describe: rampantly runnering with mishappen fruit that failed to develop. At the time, I did not know that they needed a pollinizer. Once I found this out, and planted a few plants of 'Capron' among my prolific 'Profumata', the problem was solved and both cultivars bore heavily, producing the most heavenly delicious fruit imaginable. Maybe you started with more than one cultivar but somehow lost one along the way? I think your plants could definitely benefit from some male plants (yes, the males will spread by runnering). You could also try planting more cultivars of Fragaria moschata. The Strawberry Store online sells three different cultivars: 'Profumata di Tortona', 'Capron' and 'Rosea'. When planted together, these cultivars will fruit without a male, but I would still include a few males in the mix just to be safe. I am starting a bed this spring of these three cultivars as well as the two male clones offered by Raintree. I am also going to try starting some from seed as a more long-term project. These are the BEST strawberries. No other type can compete with their amazing flavor and fragrance. Once you understand their pollination quirks, they are truly the easiest strawberries to grow. They are so vigorous and runner so rampantly that they choke out most weed growth on their own, yet are not hard to uproot if growing out of place. I have never noticed even a hint of insects or disease on them, and they were extremely winter hardy in zone 5 Michigan back in the day (even in above ground, unprotected containers). Each plant, if well spaced, can remain productive for years without having to be replaced. And the berries themselves are larger than other wild strawberries and are therefore much easier to pick.
