Name That Plant!

* Pretty Red Yellow Green Carrot-Top-Like Leaf Plants? *

I bought these cute colorful little plants from a garden club plant sale in Portland a few days ago, and have no idea what they are. All I know is that they were donated locally from someone's garden (or perhaps indoors), they're about 2 1/2 - 3" tall, have red yellow and green leaves that look similar to carrot tops in texture and shape, and they don't seem to like full sun.

Any Idea what they could be? Thanks :)

They look like Nigella damascena seedlings ie Love-in-a-Mist. The leaves are discoloured by some feature of cultivation eg lack of nutrients, age etc. Healthy plants are all green.

These are hardy annuals and they do not transplant well since they have a long yellow taproot. Your best chance of getting them to grow in your garden is to tip them carefully from the pot keeping the soil ball intact and planting the whole thing. The top one in your picture is about to flower and will very likely self sow. The seed pods are pretty.

The two women I bought them from couldn't come to an agreement on what they were. One did say that it was Love-In-A-Mist though. When I searched google for pictures of it, the leaves looked more spiked and web-like than they are now. It looks like a completely different plant at the moment. Does the foliage change as it matures?

Hi, I don't have everything you are looking for, but I have about half! plus some of the other stuff on your want list. I have leftover cucumber seeds from this year (Burpee: Sweet Burpless Hybrid). This vine was super productive for me! I have some seeds from the cukes I grew, but they probably won't come true to seed. You can have whichever you like--commercial or homegrown. also Buttercrunch lettuce (forms heads) and Grand Rapids lettuce (leaf)--both delicious, I'm still harvesting the Grand Rapids from my fall planting! commercial plus Danvers Half-long (American Seed) and Little Finger (Burpee) carrots. commercial I also have onion seed, but they grown into big yellow onions (Candy Hybrid from Lake Valley Seed) not little green ones. commercial. Have bell pepper seed (red, purple, orange) from the garden have Blue Lake Pole Bean (very prolific!) commercial also have Brandwine tomato (big, delicious, red heirloom) from the garden. Let me know if you are interested in anything! I will email you also. I'd love to trade for the Delphinium and/or hot peppers.

My take? Less water until you get her into more light. The pot should feel light when you pick it up, because the inside is almost dry. That's when you should water. Try a wooden skewer stuck into the mix. Pull it out and when it's barely damp, then water. Maybe post a picture if you can... Andrew

Yellow leaf confusion

Ugh. So today I inspect my roses, hoping that they will look a bit less yellow; instead I find that the hollytone has sprouted big clouds of white mold. I can't have that in my house, getting blown throughout the rest of the house by the air conditioning. I had already been considering if there was any way I could spray them without getting nasty chemicals in my house. So I decided, the heck with it - I hauled all 20 or so pots out in the back yard, put on my gloves and mask, mixed up a batch of the heavy duty rose and grape spray, and did the pots and all the other plants in the yard that needed it. I'll have to leave the pots out there for a few days for the chemicals to subside before I let them back in the house. I hope the wind doesn't knock them over, and if it starts raining I'll have to quick move them to the porch. Meanwhile I have to think of a way to kill off any remaining fungus gnats in the basement so they don't just reinfect the pots.

Yes - the young foliage is different from that you will see when it flowers. I am pretty sure of this id because it self sows all over my allotment. But if it turns out to be something else please come back and let us know. If you Google 'Love in Mist seedling' you will see images of the juvenile foliage.
