Name That Plant!

Should It Stay or Should It Go?

I was digging some volunteer poppies out of my garden today, and this just popped out of the ground at the same time. The root ball looks like it was, at one time, in a starter container. I'm wondering what it is, and if I should replant it. Anyone have a guess? It's in a perennial garden which was established 20 years ago, long before I got here, so I don't always know what's coming up. Western New York.

Thank you! I don't recall ever seeing this before in this garden, but who knows what happens? I will resite it and maybe try to gently separate the roots before I do so.

You can tell if its Little Bluestem by checking the base where the blades start. If they are flat, like an iris, its bluestem. Some have very blue spring/summer foliage color and the seed heads are especially nice if backlit by late afternoon sun and for winter interest. It does seed about a lot though, I deadhead mine in late winter when they start to really shatter.

Is that overhead lighting working for you in the old bathroom? A light bar and 2 sconces for our remodel last year took 3 months to get (long story) so we had to only use the ceiling cans. One above each sink. The shadows on our faces were awful, both for applying makeup and shaving. I put a diffuser in the cans which softened the light and helped a bit, but I was SO grateful when the new lights were installed. I don't care for the way they reflect off the wall in your photo, but it might only look that way in a pic, not in real light. They are very close to the wall. Taking out the soffit will open the room up more, but make sure there isn't other important stuff behind it (like pipes). -Babka

Oh good. I love purple and b&w too. Not sure how dark you are considering, but I once painted my 15x9 office a medium-dark purple (inspired by a magazine photo of an elegant dining room). As I was painting around the narrow end of the room the walls began to feel like they were moving in on m It was horrible! So back to the paint store for a lavender that hinted at periwinkle. So one option is lavender paint on top and dark purple rugs. FWIW, Kelly Moore lets you order 8x10 color samples, but you need to get the special form to fax in and then they mail them to you. I wonder if other companies do that too. ??? Good luck. Can't wait to see it.

If they are above a graft line AND you want your plant to fill out more as a shrub, then leave them. If you prefer the limbed-up tree look, then remove them. But as long as they are above the graft. they will still produce good fruit eventually. Is this plant in the ground or in a container? If container, I'd leave them. But ultimately it's an aesthetic decision.

Eryngiums are notorious for having remarkably penetrating taproots, which makes transplanting them difficult at best. I am surprised it "popped" out easily - trying to remove self-seeded eryngiums where not wanted is almost impossible. If it is an eryngium, I'd bet money most of the root is still in place :-)

It looks like it was taken out of a small seedling pot and plopped into the ground without the roots having been freed or spread. There's a remarkably sold root ball attached. I'll see if it looks like a big tap root all curled up.

No, just small, filamentous roots. Maybe it's not an Eryngium?
