An older gentelmen down the road has a 4' Pagoda in full sun, but as you mentioned you has a bunch of smaller shrubs and perrenials surrounding the tree...seems to be doing pretty good. How is your Satomi? I have a Wolf Eyes and I am debating whether to add a Satomi or Pagoda to my landscape. The Satomi seems more ornamental but Pagoda seems to tolerate more sun and has a nicer habit. The tree would be partially protected from winds, but will still get a decent amount of sun...but in time (5 years or so) will started to get some shade from an Oak I planted.

Hi, we need two trees replaced and I'm very interested in the Venus, esp since I'm a bit north, I had 2 nurseries, one 5 mins from me (don't stock bc its Zone 6) and one 20 mins from me (its zone 5 according to them and they have one) give me conflicting Zone hardiness. I'm a bit wary now because I can't seem to find enough info with anyone growing them up here in Southwestern Ontario. Theres a C. Kousa Chinensis that is absolutely gorgeous here at half the price and I'm actually tempted to get it BUT if the Venus Blooms rivals that AND is really more Zone hardy then the choice is made. Anyone growing the Venus in Zone 5 or lower?

I specialize in the propagation of Muscadine vines. I usually use a mixture of 3 part perlite t to 1 part peat moss. I use both a mist system and several Nearing Frames. I have equal success in both methods. Most of my cuttings set roots in about 5-6 weeks. In 8 weeks I pot them. If they haven't set roots in that period of time I pitch them. @Embothrium, In my arborists defense when I called he was dealing with a dead tree. It bloomed beautifully (late) and then my husband and I were travelling for weeks. When I called him he inspected all trees and shrubs on my property, he pulled back the mulch on all the beds to look for mold, critters, etc (we changed from pine needles to cedar mulch when we purchased the home 9/2016), some tests were done. Based on the info I have this tree was planted sometime in the late 60's/early 70's. It is possible that weather played a part, we had an extremely cold/long winter and much earlier and more snow than normal. And, I've still got the tree, if you'd like to pay for further testing...:) In all seriousness, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, it will help me with my other Dogwoods.
