How do I get rid of wild onions?
Comments (7)According to my weed book, your only option is to dig and dispose of each and every one - A narrow but deep-bladed transplanting or rootball spade is the best weapon against wild garlic or onions. Its blade is deep enough to reach under the bulbs, and its handle is strong enough to lever out the clump. Dig close to the clump, with the blade at a very slight angle, then lift. With your hands, pick out every bulb from the soil, even the tiny ones. Dispose of them in the trash, not on the compost pile. A pointed shovel or spade is as effective as a transplanting spade, but removes a bigger bite of soil and surrounding plants. OR you can "throw in the trowel", and harvest them for culinary and/or medicinal use. The bulbs, green tops, and even the flowers are tasty in a variety of dishes. It's also great for treatment of sore throats by steeping it in boiling water and gargling. So many good things about it. :) Brenda...See Morewild onions- how do i get rid of them
Comments (8)Before you kill off all the wild onions, try some as a seasoning. We have both wild onions and wild garlic here, but wild onion is not as invasive as wild garlic. Although the plants may look similar, wild onion can be identified by its flat leaves, where wild garlic leaves are hollow. Both are used for seasoning here, in Creole and Cajun-style cooking, and in some soul food dishes. Wild onions are used as seasoning more so than wild garlic, but both are powerful! Some folks eat wild onions as a side dish when sauteed in a little olive oil or butter. Both wild onion and wild garlic can be chopped fine and frozen, but wild onion keeps longer when frozen. Comments (5)If you keep cutting or pulling the leaves, the rhizome will eventually weaken and die, but it might take all season. I have a lot of violets, and I'm resolved to live with them and keep them from over-running everything. Besides the rhizome that can grow on the surface of the ground or buried a foot deep, they reseed prolifically. I learned to recognize the seedlings so I can pull them when they're still tiny and fragile. Whoever coined the term "shrinking violet" never gardened with these guys!...See MoreNot really a weed, but: getting rid of a patch of wild ageratum
Comments (2)Thank you. I have pulled it and covered the area in black plastic. I know they say clear plastic is best for solarization, but I will just try to smother it this way. I'll probably leave this in place until next spring, and then till and amend the soil before doing anything else with that area. Meanwhile, I'll have to see how I can keep the second ageratum patch (which has only developed a couple of years ago and has grown quite a bit already) from taking over my perennial bed......See Morehabitat_gardener
