wild onions- how do i get rid of them

Help! I've got wild onions! Blah. How do I get rid of them without killing everything around them? Just dig dig dig???

Thanks in advance for any ideas...I didn't know where I should post this so I thought I'd start here.

I don't have an answer for you, but I do have a lot of sympathy. The lady who lived in our home prior to us planted society garlic and it reseeds like crazy. I have dug and dug and this year as in previous years I seem to have more.

There is a product called Basagran T/O (which stands for tropical and ornamental) that kills wild garlic, wild onion and nutsedge. It can be sprayed around daylilies and does not kill them. It is best to use it prior to scapes emerging because it can cause a scape to twist slightly but it doesn't stop them from blooming.

Or you can wait until the heat of summer shows up and the wild onion and garlic will disappear until the cool weather in fall.

Greetings to all ... Wow, this is an old post but always very relevant, right? Actually, I recently purchased 3 pre-potted plants: Bougainvillea, Pentas Plant, and a large Kale from a popular local farm. They were not pot-bound, so I did not repot them ... Just placed them in my yard. Little did I know all three had millipedes in the soil, and all three eventually died. It was when I uprooted the dead plants that I discovered the millipedes in the soil. Now I know to always repot anything I purchase from them. This soil is very rich in organic matter, so I saved it in a sealed clear plastic bag and solarized it to eliminate the millipedes. I'm not certain if the millipedes eventually feed on the roots of potted plants, but that appears to be where the issue was. The plants just dried out rather quickly. In fact, I placed a potted succulent on top of the soil of the Bougainvillea and it lost all its root system. At least that one can be easily rerooted. Millipedes may be beneficial in natural settings but not in potting soil and definitely not in houseplants. Diatomaceous Earth (food-grade DE) does not address the issue. You have to replace the soil ... Especially so if yours is a houseplant. Millipedes do not bite but most people are allergic to a substance they ooze, which causes itching and skin irritation.

I had tried everything that said it killed wild onion... no such luck... And this year.. they were coming up everywhere! In some obscure forum somewhere I came across the comment that "my yard man said that if I had wild onions I needed to add lime to my yard." I did some more googling on wild onions and lime and found several more similar comments. So.. what the heck... I'd give it a try. I bought fast acting pelletized lime at Lowe's and applied it at the rate of two bags per 5000 sq ft. Amazing... Two months later and the wild onions are GONE! It does seem to be true... wild onions like a more acid soil... and my grass likes a more neutral soil. Adding the lime got rid of the wild onions fast... and my yard is a bit greener and lusher from the lime too. If you have wild onions... give the lime a try. Sure worked for me!

Those are aphids. If you don't use insecticides, natural predators such as lacewings, ladybugs and hoverflies will show up later and reduce populations. Meanwhile, if the aphids are overwhelming the plant, you can knock them off with your hands or a good spray of water. Your young Ping Dong Yue Ji rose would benefit from a good shower. The water will also wash off the aphid's sticky "honey dew" that can attract ants. The white objects are aphid carcasses. I don't worry about aphids as much as I used to. I want the beneficial insects well fed so that they will reproduce and take care of the thrips that arrive later in the season.

All I can see is that they have a pinnate leaf. So not Boysenberry and definitely not Daucus carota. Possible candidates are Sumac, Ailanthus and Aruncus. If you can take closer pictures and post either here, or better still on the Name That Plant Forum, you'll get an id in short order. Then you can decide what to do with it. If it is not an invasive alien species I would think long and hard about what you'd put there instead if you choose to eradicate. At present it is doing n efficient job of ground cover.

I am always pulling and digging those wild onions. Never figgured any other way to get rid of them. Its true that they are only annoying in the spring. A little while later they dissapear for the year as the weather warms up. Really heavy mulching sometimes gets rid of them if they can't push thru the mulch.

Before you kill off all the wild onions, try some as a seasoning. We have both wild onions and wild garlic here, but wild onion is not as invasive as wild garlic. Although the plants may look similar, wild onion can be identified by its flat leaves, where wild garlic leaves are hollow. Both are used for seasoning here, in Creole and Cajun-style cooking, and in some soul food dishes. Wild onions are used as seasoning more so than wild garlic, but both are powerful! Some folks eat wild onions as a side dish when sauteed in a little olive oil or butter. Both wild onion and wild garlic can be chopped fine and frozen, but wild onion keeps longer when frozen.

What a timely post, Judy. Just yesterday, our contractor, who knows quite a lot about wild plants, told me that the plant was edible. We each ate a bulb....very sweet.

The green tops are good, too! Use them as you would regular green onion tops. Delicicious!
