Idyll 343 Spring !!!

Wow! The first time I get to start an Idyll! I am thrilled! I have arrived!!!

My choice of title is based on my activities for the last two days: raking, cleaning up...even though I still have ice and snow the five wheelbarrow loads of leaves are now in the farm compost!!

Let's see your bits of green!!

O.K. now I can calm down a bit..

Living next to a park has a few disadvantages....we always have squirrels, moles and voles, and leaves! As we are the first house next to the park, all of the leaves get caught here and even though I clean up well in the fall, over the winter a ton of leaves blows over here and I have another big cleanup in the Spring. My rule of thumb for said cleanup is the 29th of March - DS's birthday - because that is usually when it is safe to uncover the garden. But this year, with little snow, the dry leaves are everywhere, and this week-end's beautiful weather has tempted me beyond control. So I have raked and tidied for two days. With our small lot, that is about all it takes.

However...one thing I can't abide is being called "Dear" by anyone other than my DH or my Mother. As dear Mother is with the angels, only DH has this right. So when the elderly neighbours stop by and say "You are taking off the leaves way too soon DEAR, it is too early to rake DEAR, I have to gnash my teeth and smile as nicely as possible and ...well, grin and bear it. I am 61 years old but am much younger than most of my neighbours...two bed bunglows and small lots in a subdivision tend to attract people of a certain age - and 61 is not it. These same oldsters stop all summer to tell me that I have the nicest garden in the area (not really - maybe the nicest amateur, but most have pros) and do not hesitate to ask me for things "if you are planning to split that whatever it is DEAR, I would like some..." and I always split stuff up and share.

My family is just in fits of hilarity over this, as they know just how much I hate being called "Dear". Happened three times today - and not DH or Mom. O.K., rant over.

I have a KA wannabe (Salton, a brand I've never heard of), Chelone, a gift from DD a few years ago...and it meets my needs very well. As I may have mentioned before, I am not a real whiz in the kitchen, and I would never have bought such an appliance myself, but I must admit it works very well and it gets much more use than I would have thought.

Like you, I got by for many many years with a kitchen that was just barely adequate. Old houses require so much basic stuff (like roofs, plumbing, etc.) that the kitchen is often left unless the menfolk don't get to eat. After 26 years we put in an amazing custom designed kitchen that was absolutely wonderful... and then sold the house. Well, the teensy beautiful kitchen sold the house...

After much discussion, DH has finally realized that I simply cannot go on without a greenhouse, having had one for several years attached to house with the afore-mentioned wonderful kitchen. We really have no place to build one here....but...we DO have a garden shed. We have installed a nice window in this shed, left over from when we had the solarium window installed in what was supposed to be the dining area of this house. DH and DS have now come over to my point of view that replacing the shed roof with greenhouse material and changing the shelving inside would provide me with a reasonable facsimile of a greenhouse. But of course, the $$$$. After the reunion, I think. But very exciting for me - I loved my greenhouse!

My Giant Cactus Zinnias are all up, but I have lost one whole pot to damp-off. I have watered well with Damp-off, but this whole pot has succembed. I used general potting soil for seed starting for the first time- next time I will go back to soilless mix. The peppers are doing well though, as are the Four O,clocks and the Lobelia. Yes, Marian, the Lobelia I have started are dark blue with a white throat. The Cannas are all poking their heads up, and the Pelargoniums that I started from cuttings last fall are enormous! Outside, I hae tiny little buds on several clems, the iris are just showin a hint of green points, the crocus are just sticking their noses out to see if it is spring, and, wonder of woners, my climbing Hydrangea has leaves. There is still ice at its base!!

Anyway, sorr y for the "me" post but I haven't been here ofr so ong, I am almost afraid to look at what I have missed!!

Wow, everyone got a burst of chattiness - neat to see more folks come out of the wood work and I will surely miss most of all the important items to hit. Michelle - egad, I do hope they figure out your chest pain, etc., symptoms -- a lot of stress in life lately of some sort? I sure hope you can take some of that extra time off and relax and enjoy and maybe figure out how to get you back up to snuff. Yeona - love love that abies - I've lusted after the abies Silberlocke ever since seeing Monique's photos of hers and in person (the abies that is)... Yea, on a few more idyller sightings (hi Cyn -- you're having tough work time too, uh?) and nothing like those mini-meet-ups. (Kathy I checked out "garden porns" blog photos of the show, LOL, so I feel suitably informed. It's tough to look, take photos and report ... it's a lot of skill I think. Keeping my fingers crossed on Drema's success re job interviews and new opportunities - persist, persist, is all one can do. Saucy's new job sounds challenging tooo. Love that chandelier idea and I think Deanne is the perfect garden to do that!!! Can't wait to see what your artistry turns up. I smell a new trend coming.... Cold, terribly windy and gloom coming - this month is the Longest month - how did that happen? There was sun but that was the last of it - now rain, etc. Norma, I hope your cat enjoys her days in peace. Woody, glad to hear you survived that course. Congrats. O, I know I've missed all other important things... will try to get back on a new thread (i'm dancing dangerously tagging all this on the end of this thread, teehee).... -cindy

Well, I guess itÂs a week of birthdaysÂwow! Trying to remember if Babs has been here since I arrived but drawing a blank. Maybe sheÂll drop in to say hi on her birthday. I do not have that much spring color yet; hoping the shrubs pop after this rain to brighten things up. Cyn, I canÂt believe youÂre going to reach 90 today! My neighborÂs violets are spreading into our yard. ItÂs not that I hate them, itÂs more that I hate not having a choice about getting them, lol. Trip to one nursery was a bit disappointing. They have a display of plants they grow in their greenhouse so everything is still young. More variety will be offered when shipments come in and I realize itÂs still very early in the season. Thought youÂd want to know that I bought a new pair of rockers in honor of all your birthdays! (snicker) They are sooo comfortable, Drema, that toe knuckle doesnÂt even have to bend! Supposed to help tone your calves and bum, too, but they just feel great. DD loves hers and suggested I might like them. No problem getting used to the curved sole either, I put them on and wore them home. Just noticed I was so anxious to start walking I forgot to lace the top eyelet! HereÂs a pic standing in the garage doing a contortion act so you can see the side sole. Must start thinking about dinnerÂpossibly meatloaf and scalloped potatoes. DH wonÂt get home until later this evening so itÂs my turn to cook. Anything I donÂt have to stand at the stove gets my vote. Hey, Chelone!...waving you back here :-)

Chelone, Im impressed with your shopping trip. I keep my KA in a corner of the counter. I m able to shove it back far enough that it really isnt in the way. Who uses the deep corners anyway? I think they are used a lot in décor or have become that because they are so heavy. Between Chelone posting the dead vole and Kathys thoughts on what she may make with it, you guys crack me up. I considered the mixer lift when we were working on our kitchen but decided that I really didnt want to give up a whole cabinet for it. I have my measuring spoons separated. What happens when one is dirty and in the dishwasher and you need another size? I have 2 little plastic baskets screwed down in the front of my utensil drawer that I keep them in along with a few other small items that would get lost in the drawer. The corkscrew being one which you would hate to have to search too much for. I cant imagine living without a microwave and often comment that I would like to have 2. My morning Multi-grain hot cereal is so easy to make right in its own bowl. V, I gave my DD a KA for a shower gift. I think it is a perfect gift since they will have it for many years and will remember who gave it to them. Even my DD who isnt extremely interested in kitchen activities loves using it for cookies. Her DH was pretty excited about it as well. PM, I find it interesting that my hellebores are about the size of yours but I see no signs of the crocus. Although, most of my crocus are underneath the ivy and that probably keeps the ground cold longer. My DD loved Madeline. Im thinking Kenzie should have a few. Eden, you really should plant a few veggies with Bella. Kenzie really loved the vegetable part of the garden as much as the flowers. Last summer she was always so excited to pick the "aspartagus" (her pronunciation, not my poor spelling) and pulling carrots and onions was also great fun for her. I put a couple of cherry tomato plants in her garden because she loves eating them. They Easter decorations are so fun, Im sure Bella was thrilled. There was a petition going around on Facebook voting for a Victory garden of sorts at the White House, I guess they got the message. Since we are having an overnight guest who we havent met, Id better get going and clean this pit up. The guest is guest minister at our church from Michigan. Later Michelle

Just learned that on this day in the early '40s, Virginia Woolfe decided to go for a one way swim in a river near her home. Tough to swim with a rock in the pocket of your fur coat. You know, I was thinking that perhaps Michelle would be working in her 'rents' house! I think that's such a generous thing for you and your siblings to do for them. Mum was steadfast in her refusal to allow my brother or me to do anything... now we don't have to "get permission". You are going to be all tuckered out when it's all finished. Hard enough to do it on your own, but to have to orchestrate the efforts of several people will probably present untold challenges too. I hope there will be "befores" and "afters". ;) Better eat your Wheaties. I do not have any Peruvian Daffodils here. I chuckled at that story, Marian. I concur with Saucy about the amount of time I'm "behind", too. I immediately noticed the difference between the yellows of Forsythia (For Cynthia) and the Clove Currant, though I have to say nothing says "spring" to me more than good ol' Forysthia (and those electric blue tarps that cover everything!). Doesn't it do your heart glad to look out your windows and see evidence of the new season everywhere? I'm still satisfying myself with a piddly patch of snowdrops and a couple of pools of crocus. Very sorry to learn about your friend's death; saying farewell is never easy, is it? Still, though, I've come to view death differently in the past few years, more like the period at the end of a sentance. Sometimes an "end" is needed to bring fuller meaning to what came before. I heard red-winged blackbirds the other day, too! I have an area on the border of the south lawn that I think is screaming for a nice shrub border. I always think of Saucy when I see Viburnums and I shall add Marian and Kathy to that list now, too. So much to do and so little time... getting the suckering growth out is going to be a challenge since the lawn area stays soggy and getting a tractor in will be tricky. Rex and I noticed that the flattened squirrel he enjoyed the other day was missing yesterday when we passed by. Evidently the night shift was scrupulous in its clean-up efforts. I don't know why I think things like that are interesting, but I do. Yes Woody, I too admire the pragmatic way you strive to bring joy and vitality to a life that's required "reworking". It's probably that aspect of our human condition that I most admire, actually. Your approach to your landscape design course is a perfect example as is the way you've addressed safety issues in the kitchen. Never say die 'n' all that jazz. I hope the plans for Randy's retirement come to comfortable fruition; and present economic conditions turn around, though I'm not holding my breath on that count. I spent a lovely evening in the Salon, warmed by a nice fire in the stove. It was peaceful (no background coughing or complaining) and I listened to an old favorite, "Breezin'" by George Benson, a CD my brother burned for me last weekend. I particularly like the cut "Affirmation" (Jose Feliciano composition). I came in and with renewed zeal began Googling for adjustable H legs on casters AGAIN. I found some great work benches that were very expensive, not what I wanted, but again no source for independent components for "build your own" work tables. I find the whole exercise terribly frustrating and basically a colossal waste of time when I come up empty handed. I'll try again today, but limit the time I devote to it. I REALLY need to get some stuff set up and ready to go in the Salon; I want to do some fun stuff! I have prices coming early next week for the shower base and the countertop and will compare them to on-line sources. If the prices are not terrifically disparate I always prefer to "shop local". It's important to consider the hidden costs of "shopping price", lost local tax revenue, etc.. I know many at the lumberyard well and they've helped me greatly over the years. I've narrowed the choice of sinks down to 2 or 3, and have to zero in on a faucet, a mixing valve and shower head, shower seat, and grab bars. Once that's done I'll contact my brother and we'll begin the demolition phase, starting with the sink area. If we progress incrementally we should be inconvenienced minimally though for a longer period of time. Tiling is going to occupy a good deal of fiddly time, I fear. 'bug, I'm glad that there is some hopeful news on the Skyler front. This is not the time to be faced with such foolish and selfish worries. What is up with people who delight in destroying the joy and excitement people feel as a new baby's arrival draws near? EX must be one miserable excuse for a human life form!

Well...that is a puzzle. Out of curiosity I went back to see where and what Idyll #343 was. I found a #342, and a #344, but no 343! So maybe, just maybe , Julie is making up for the skipped number? Or maybe she spent too much time on her wine porch??? LOL

In wandering around our yard, I discovered a very dead armadillo out front by the wood fence! I have no idea how long is has been there, or what caused it's demise. I could take a pic of it for Chelone to analyze. LOL

Poor Julie...I've had my share of mislabeled threads...lol. It has been confusing with the old threads popping up. Someone has to start a new one.
