It looks like it to me. Why do you want to treat the plant for bugs?

Thanks, carrieb. Because every year these plants get chewed to the ground before they can bloom. The pic 3rd from last shows one where it has already begun. It's out of focus, but you can still see.

"chewed to the ground" doesn't sound like bugs. Sounds more like deer.

In past years, day by day, as I walk past, more small bits (1/8" to 1/4) are gone from the leaves, until the plant shows distress and dies. I have heard rumors that one deer was sighted in this forest, but other than him, the deer were hunted out decades ago.

But even if it were deer --I'd like to see it bloom. Now will you tell me if I can move it without killing it?

You can move them. While they are growing is tougher. You need to dig down deep and get under the bulbs to get roots to come along with the bulb.

You can move them, but be sure to surround the bulbs and roots with moist soil. It's very easy to break the stem. Can you apply some insecticide to them right where they are? I've saved whole populations of wild lilies by treating them like garden plants. Do you have slugs or snails there? If so, put a little slug bait around the plants. Then when they go dormant in fall, you can easily dig the bulbs out. Stick a colored label into the ground, so you can easily find them when they are dormant. You should plant them where they will get at least a half day of sun. Otherwise they may never get strong enough to bloom.

Lilydude and saltcedar, thank you! Sorry for the delay getting back --my ISP has been down. I have bioneem, which would control that beetle --hiking all the way up there with it would require serious devotion. I have pink flags, (although knowing the location hasn't helped me get up my ginger lilies the past 2 winters. I swear --the rhizomes vanish!) I think I'll mark them, treat if I can figure out an easier way that lugging the heavy sprayer, and wait till fall. Thanks very much for your help and advice!
