Yes, I was glad for the smaller size... amazing the options out there once you know what to search for. Similar cost to the paper or Ziploc sacks I'm currently using - and less than the small special order seed bags in retail quantities. We've used our old red or brown produce mesh sacks for bulbs, but now can have organza in a variety of sizes and almost any color of the rainbow - may rock at the next swap :-D Back on topic, I'm still wondering how copper lilies manage to produce enough energy to survive. The leaves seem to appear for very short periods once they start blooming at maturity - that's what makes it so tough to know how they're doing (or where they even are). The grass-like foliage that persisted over the 2.5+ years with the potted juvenile plants from germination to first bloom is now dying off, so seems to be starting this adult cycle of appearing and disappearing - more like a spider than a rain lily. A vendor I don't remember seeing when we bought ours back in 2012 says they take 5 years to get established and spread... so, may have a year to go before judging how the ones from 2012 are actually naturalizing in our clay.

OP The aerial roots you have on your plant aren't normal for the type of plant it is but suggest you not remove them from the bigger part of your plant as they do have a use for now when no longer needed they should eventually dry off or may make contact with the soil. Why and how it got aerial roots: The typical BBS like Home Depot C&S plants are usually kept in darker areas on lower shelving On a weekly - bi weekly basis some out side vendor comes in and waters all the plants inside the store needing it or not. The areal roots you have developed on there own because of improper watering skills being used with very poor lighting conditions. LOL lena your pic has me very puzzled and very oddly confused as well what you say is normal for a kalanchoe is (factually speaking) looking very gravely ill . It looks more like the newest hybrid called Kalanchoe compost pile to me. In comparison to the same kalanchoe found on an image search. The succulents that do develop and need to keep aerial roots for there growing/ moisture collecting needs are few and far in between IMO there is one maybe two of these types of succulents that could be found at a BBS like Home Depot. As the OP didn't post a pic of any aerial root type that I know of I think it's best that the OP try root the smallest part of the plant in question have a bit of fun with the rest of it while learning more about them. I'll end my wording knowing you both got a succulent on the deader edge of it's life.

alyssa Plants will survive in all kinds of soil. That doesn't mean they are really happy and grow to their best potential. Improving potting mix is highly recommended, as it is very easy to do. There are many factors that have big influence on good health and growth of the plant. Some are much easier to change than others. Fast draining mix is relatively easy (limited by willingness of the person to do some extra work, and/or ease of finding supplies - but even here, there are few possibilities). So please do not feel offended if improving the mix is one of the first things suggested. Using what you have or using better mix would make difference, but if you like what you have - please continue using it. Slow draining or water-retaining mix could be a #1 limiting factor, and could cause lots of problems. Members of this forum are quite eager to help, and yes - there are many seasoned C&S people here. Nothing wrong with mentioning that, and it is not a put down. I am not taking sides here, but one should understand that if a question is asked, there will be some answers. Person asking will get very often advice on something she/he didn't ask about, since others will notice things that can be improved. As mentioned before, many plants grow aerial roots. And there are few types of them, and some should stay because of their function. I am not absolute sure what is the reason for your plant growing this root. I have quite a few succulents that grow them too. I used to believe that if there is more humidity, more of these aerial roots will grow on succulents. I am not saying that is the only (or most important) reason. Some seasoned C&S people suggested that plant could be thirsty - that makes lot of sense to me. I do not want to say that because reader could start watering their plant too much, and damage could be irreversible. All I know - since I have done it and plants are alive -, that they can be easily rubbed off if you don't like them. My plants could be little thirsty - but I rather have them that way than over-watered. The roots are good because I checked them. They are potted in very gritty mix (grit, perlite and some turface) that doesn't have any organic component.
