Help! Fruit Rats eating my tomatoes
Comments (1)What is a fruit rat? I don't think I we have those in Kansas. Squirrels are a problem here. Could you hang a wind chime on the tomato cage that would make a sound and scare them off? How about a "motion sensor" light installed at the top of the fence? Hope you find something that will work so you can enjoy your tomatoes. Comments (6)I was just about to post about the slugs being back. I also have snails but they aren't terribly destructive and besides that they are pretty. The garden snails have yellow and black swirled shells so even though they eat a bit they get to stay. The slugs on the other hand are TERRIBLE!!!!!!! They are big and nasty and eat everything! I get them bad every year. Diatomaceous earth works very well but needs constant reapplication and is expensive. Unfortunately that's the only thing I can use as I won't use poison bait and all you get with beer are bowls of dead bloated slugs. That's even grosser then lives ones. I've also heard of copper tape but have never tried it. It would be really difficult to try and protect some plants/areas with it. I use straight DE. I've never heard of the product you are talking about but it probably works fine. I just don't know if it contains any poison. When looking for DE make sure you get agricultural grade and not the stuff used for pool filters. I decided I was going to save money and use the DE from our pool filter when the sand was changed. I later found out that it's dangerous, a carcinogen, or something. Too bad because there's so much DE in the filter and I have to go out and buy it....See Moremice and rats eating tomatoes
Comments (18)The yellow pear tomatoes haven't deterred the rats in my garden. If fact, that is the only tomato plant they haven't even touched. My 40 heirloom tomato plants were 6ft tall, green and gorgeous. I did a great job of killing the rooms and keeping pests away until they started ripening. Now I can't stop them from eating all my tomatoes. I made individual cages for all remaining big tomatoes to keep the rats out. The outside light just turned on and I looked out and 3 small tomatoes were gone just like that but the mini caged ones haven't been touched. I have yet to see the rodents actually steal or eat tomatoes...they are quick and work well at night that's for sure. And they steal my cherry tomatoes too but don't like Black Prince tomatoes (which is good cuz they are my favorite). But I have to come up with good game plan for next year because I lost a lot of money this year and realistically can't make mini cages for all my tomatoes. I should post a picture....See MoreSnails as big as RATS in Florida. No joke.
Comments (13)Yeah we saw a bunch of these around our Hotel in Uganda a few years ago. They will definitely freak out a Hosta gardener. No Hosta that I could see in the area. Not much eats a Sansevieria, but apparently these guys do. They were sliming their way along the railings of the veranda on which we were having breakfast. They didn't seem to be eating the stucco. Plenty of vegetation for them to consume in a rainforest ecosystem. This was in Entebbe along the shore of Lake Victoria. Steve...See Morepatty4150
