Southern Ontario Orchid Show

Hi Everyone,

I had a great time again at this year's show, clerking and later volunteering with the members sale table. This year I did paph hybrids...since I know nothing about paphs phrags or anything with a pouch, it was a pretty good learning experience! There were lots of great plants in the displays, and the vendors were plentiful and well stocked.

Here are some photos from the show - a bonus for being a clerk and arriving at 7:30AM is first dibs on sales and also photography time without the crowds! I wrote down the name of every plant I took a photo of, but managed to lose the scrap of paper..grr. I'm sure it's kicking around somewhere, but until then, all I have are names from memory.

Other things that were pretty fun:

I managed to walk away with just two plants (ancistrochilus thomsonianus, leptotes bicolor), both of which have been on the wish list. I got a great deal for the leptotes ($10) so I also bought some cork for mounting. Other tempting plants included Dendrobium cucumerinum, aerangis luteo alba var. R, and cymbidium lancifolium. I think I should get a standing ovation for good behavior :)

I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that one of the three photos I submitted for the art exhibit won a 2nd place ribbon :)

I found out about a plant that I now must have at some point: Cymbidium lancifolium - {{gwi:143048}}

...and I'll be back hopefully with photos from the Royal Botanical Gardens Orchid Society show in two weeks, along with a trip to the Cloud's Orchids spring preview. I love February.

Thanks for the tour - your pics are excellent. It gave me a needed orchid fix since I don't have a show to attend until mid-March.

Thanks mrbreeze. I appreciate the reassurance. I was scared I had some kind of crown problem that I just couldn't see yet. It's definitely one of my more interesting plants. Within days of transplanting it any of the hydroton that was even touching a root was stuck to it like I'd gone in there with superglue, and I can't seem to give it too much light. When I moved into my new place I accidentally left a bunch of my orchids too close to my windows and many of my orchids got a serious case of sunburn (even the Dens and Catts which still look awful). The magdalenae wasn't touched. Hopefully I can get this one to bloom sometime. I didn't have too much luck blooming my orchids in my last place. Tyler

I have bought canna and calla root at Home Depot in early spring. But I do prefer our local garden center, as the root isn't bagged and it is stored in peat. I picked up a few varietes last year - both dark and striped leafed colours. I'm close to Belleville and use Thrashers Garden Center.

Wow, Josephines167! That is gratifying. I am looking forward to the years my hostas will leap and have an increase in pips. After your pip count it must feel so gratifying to see such increases... at least I would feel that way- as if the hostas are thanking me with pips for last years "TLC" given to them. :) I am located in the cusp of zone 4 and 3. According to the houzz zone finder it says I am in zone 3, however I have always checked with other Maps and my area usually is Zone 4 at the borderline. As for extra work with hostas... it's ok, I like to fuss over them, too. I will have to repot my containers with better structured soil (more coarse to prevent rotted roots). Currently, I am reluctant to set them outside... I do not trust the weather yet. lol I have a sneaky suspicion that once a good set of leaves are unfurled there will be a cold snap and I would be racing to bring all the pots inside... or that I would have neglected to check the weather that one day and I would sadly find out the next morning when I am looking at mushy leaves. Murphy's law, etc. Back to your pips... Excellent increase and looking forward to the eye candy photos this year! *I will confess that I have lurked for so long - over a year- drooling over everyone's hostas. Love them. :)

Thanks for looking :) Brooke - yes I was pretty amazed at myself. Then again, now that I think about it, I may have held off buying goodies in anticipation for the show in two weeks...it won't be as spectacular, but they have excellent (and incredibly cheap) divisions from their huge greenhouses (I got a division of coel. cristata for 6 dollars last year...as well as a flacida (5 dollars) and a gigantic fimbriata (8 dollars), which I'm looking forward to.

Carol - wish you could have made it too! Any chance you'll make the burlington show?

Thanks Brooke and Sue :) I was a little mad because my photo which looked pretty good on the computer screen printed out fuzzy...but that's what you get for having a crappy camera and primitive camera skills

Sue - that is Aerangis kirkii...one of my favorites and one of the only plants I intentionally bought TWO of when I saw it for sale. (Saw another one this wknd at the show but refrained from buying a third). It has the most refreshing fragrance. No credit to me for the blooms but I think I noticed a new spike forming on it today!

I am jealous of your kirkii. Mine is not as big and not as nice... yet. It's a work in progress. I really wish I could get another one. There's just something about the leaf shape that I really like. I love the flowers too, but let's face it, we're looking at the leaves for most of the year.

On the upside, mystacidii is spiking! Very exciting to me. Citrata is still plugging along. It doesn't look the slightest bit close to blooming. Just spike, no buds yet. Oh well.

But kirkii... sigh. If I see another one for sale, I'm going to snatch it right up.

Calvin, i assume that you were not tempted to buy Dendrobium cucumerinum. One of those orchids that is inclined to die when tended by mere mortals. Love the sentence in Native Orchids of Australia by David L Jones.
"Can be tricky to maintain in cultivation."

Hey Calvin -small world... I pointed that photo out to my wife on our way out of the sales area as one of the plants on my wishlist. :) She agreed that it ought to be!
Nice show (but BUSY) with some great displays. My wishlist is now a fair bit longer. Will need greenhouse FOR SURE haha!
