Brooke - I love Dendrobiums. They're my favorite genus just because of the huge variation, but unfortunately most of them are far too big for my space. There are four more Dens in the case...three moniliformes and an unicum (all sad looking and mostly leafless at the moment). I have four more somewhat larger Dendrobiums outside the case as well. quinnfyre - It's a modified purchase. The case was sold as an acryllic atrium and had a screen top and a section in the front that was also made of screen mesh. I cut out the screen at the top and replaced it with a sheet of glass to which I had siliconed pieces of cork to act as spacers to let air in and allow me to feed in the tube from the fogger. To the screen section at the front I just siliconed another piece of glass without first removing the screen. I also had to silicone the base, as it was not water tight. I'm also finding that the acrylic is warping though hopefully the aluminum frame will keep it from getting too bent out of shape. The plant in the top left corner for the second and third pictures is the Den lawesii that I purchased at the orchid show. Calvin - The Aeranthes is the one with the tag centered in the second to last picture. The one in the last photo was another purchase from the show, but I can't remember which off the top of my head, and I can't check right now (I'm at work). It's likely the articulata or the mystacidii though. There are many things inside the case that are going to get much larger than they are currently. I have six seedling sized phals in the bottom that are eventually going to have to be removed, and I don't even know what I'm going to do with the Ang sesquipedale. It's only about 6" tall right now, but if the ones on display at the show are any indication it's only at about 1/4 of it's final size. Hopefully once some of the other plants can be removed I'll have space for the larger sized Angs to grow. Tyler

Thanks for the input, Calvin. I know who has the Centroglossa, but I doubt it is divisable at this point anyhow even if he was willing. Growing Angraecoids got me interested in growing these other little monopodial species, mostly from Asia. Mount 'em and treat them like the Angs. I got an Aerangis unbonata and an Angraecum teretifolium from the Malala order this year (by Botanica). Both came through just fine; the unbonata is just kind of sitting right now but healthy and with some live roots, and the Ang teretifolium (some dispute if it is a linearifolium) never missed a beat and continues to push roots into the treefern mount -- not even a single leaf tip browned during its long voyage from Madagascar. With the currency exchange rate (the US$ vs. Euro) much better this year than last) the plants ended up about $35 each total with S&H, etc. Still a lot of money though. I think I only lost two; an Ang and a leafless. The Aeranthes henrici was an easy grower all the years I had it. All it took was water settling in the leaf axils one cool winter night -- and it was history. I originally got the plant from, of all places, Oak Hill. There are a lot of really nice Angraecoids out there for sale by online dealers - I try to keep track of them - but what I find is this dealer has one I want, another has one I want, another has two I want -- I just don't want to place such a small order and pay an entire shipping bill. I'm cheap; I'm mostly Scot and it shows.

Jeanne, dunno how old the plant was last summer, but it had 6 mature leaves, the largest 8"x4," and 2 keikis. The original spike had branched twice. Checking back, the complete blooming - 5 flowers - lasted 3 months. It was probably cut short by taking the plant to the State Fair exhibit, where it was hot. Several other Phals bloomed for 5+ months - it's all relative. :) C, this is not a small plant. It's one of those "dinner plate" shapes, with the leaves growing in a fan. Right now, it's 12"x14." Sooner or later, this one will be replaced w/ a bellina hybrid or species that stays small, as long as it smells like plumeria. WC8

You are more than welcome. May I suggest Aerangis splendida and distincta as well? You may also enjoy hyaloides for a tiny diamond-dust covered change of pace. And for Montreal, I certainly wouldn't be without Angraecum magdalenae. It has a truly divine fragrance and would probably like some chilly Canadian temps. :) Congratulations on your biloba! -MB
