OMG no, I don't. I've tried to before but the sheer number of trees/gardens/plants here has precluded doing that in any meaningful manner. I don't even have schematics anymore of where I planted what.

I suspect that doing it for a living means that I am so caught up in keeping the records for plant material in the business end of it doesn't leave a lot of time for a gardening journal. Despite the fact that I don't.........I spend so much of my time outside, that I have a very good feel for what sprouts/blooms when and in what order and the history of most of the flora in my world. Every year it unfolds just a little differently, and I have found that journals are good history, but not necessarily predictors of what happens when in the future.

I use small looseleaf notebooks about 8X6" by EZ Records with good quality filler paper....easy to adapt to my needs. Even in winter I make a few notes re bird visits, nests located, weather, and of course my tropical plants inside. I have Monthly tabs but ignore the printed daily date as I often write weekly rather than daily, and may use several days' paper...just note what day I did write. At end of year I clip pages together, but leave in notebook for reference, i.e. March has blamk pages for 2009 followed by March 2006=2008. 2005 and earlier years are filed elsewhere.

I don't try and journal each plant, just what catches my eye like the first seeds sprouting, trees and shrubs leafing out or early bulbs, thru first/last blooms and Fall coloring of foliage. What surprises, delights, disappoints...lol Might write daily in early spring, later weekly...a 1/2 page or several pages. This is where the notebooks adaptability for adding pages as needed comes in.

Have separate notebook for plants, purchase, cost, nursery, often catalog pix with culture info or info gathered on web. Later dated notes as to how it prospers or not...all info handy for bulb reorders or interesting to know how old that plant is...how it grew from 4" pot to 6 foot Japanese Maple...lol

These notebooks are wellmade and small enough to take to porch or garden, or keep nearby sofa...otherwise I wouldn't keep up with them. Plus I like being able to insert extra stuff like a birdfeather or dried leaf...lol The paper is sturdy, can take ink both sides w/o bleeding thru, and because there are 16 rings it doesn't pull out easily...in fact I use these notebooks for recipes, quotations, personal journal, books and gardenbooks on my shelves, and of course addresses...lol I'm teased about my "little black books" but some date back to the 1960's and paper doesn't get brittle or yellow...it's a record of my life of books and gardens. josh

I keep one on my PC in a desultary manner - some entries are much more detailed than others. However, I'm very diligent about recording weather, temperatures & rainfall amounts & that, actually has turned out to be very valuable.

I have that data in my birding journals for four months out of the year, when it's most variable. I also have a personal journal of sorts and I have kept calendars for years, since I jot down important notes on them. They have been very valuable too.

Well the first place I headed in the general store was the notebook section and I got my self 2 books..i got a hardcover book with lined pages..and a sketch diary, a small sketchbook with medium weight blank drawing paper pages..

I too keep a regular diary in my remote control drawer by the t v and computer, i record temps, exercise, weight, things that happen during the day, etc..in this nearly every day, sometimes when i'm busy the pages stay blank, but i try. I also keep track of birthdays and appointments in this one.

I also like josh have other notebooks..i have some that have squared off pages where i sketch out garden plans and ideas..i have spiral bound notebooks that i glue clippings into ..several..all with labels like "gardening" "sheds" "interior design" "baking recipes' "meal recipes" "self help" etc..i'm a real big note taker too.

i have notes on a lot of my favorite books in notebooks..and i have notes in my books, i write in all my books and underline everything.

but i have tried to do the hardbound garden diaries before and they are just too structured for me..as Josh says, i do them sporadically, i write down when i see my first robin, what plants i've grown that did really well for me, when the last hard frosts are and when the snow actually melts, when the first flowers are opening..anmd i try to go week by week in the growing season and make a list of what is blooming at the same time, mainly so i can know how to arrange my plants to a pleaseing garden someday..when i divide plants, i'll have a list of what else was blooming at the same time and maybe i can find a pink this that goes with a pink that in the new garden..etc.

as far as lists..i keep in another notebook a list of each plant that i've ordered mail order, or lists of packets of seeds that i have bought and am ready to plant this year, a list of leftover seeds from last year and a list of what i want to buy..etc..

i think my purpose for this garden notebook is to be able to write my "garden" type thoughts of what is going on in my property that has really nothing to do with the rest of my life..in the house..etc..and something i can go back to.

i have kept the same daily diary hardcover from the same plublisher every year for about 20 or so,they send them to me automatically, but they aren't really garden diaries..i wanted something that i could keep just for my gardening..

also i think the sketch book will be nice to have on the front porch to grab with some pencils or pastels so that i can draw whatever catches my fancy..as well, it isn't pretty, maybe I'll cover it with some pretty fabric or paper..why aren't sketchbooks pretty like the journals and hardback notebooks are that they sell..don't they think artists like pretty???? duh..i have some larger 8x11 sketchbooks, but i did want a grab size one that i can have handy rather than schlepping around big ones..too.
