Sungold and sweet 100, do you let them grow crazy?

I have some question would like to hear from all you who have grow many years of sungold and sweet100. Please let me know you grow on the ground or container.

1.Do you prune your cherry tomato plant like sungold and sweet 100? If let them just grow CRAZY, will its produce more fruits? less fruit? small fruit?

2. Are you growing in green house or at your garden?

3. Any fruit crack or problem you facing when you get rain for few days?

4. disease and insect problem you face.

Hope can hear from all of you.

I stake the plants and prune off problem branches when necessary.

I grow in both a greenhouse and the regular garden. I like Sun Gold in the gh better than outdoor because it tends to crack easily. I haven't had Sweet 100 in the gh so I can't compare those.

If you have color showing on the fruits before you have heavy rain in the forecast you can pick them. They'll finish turning color off the vine and you'll avoid cracking from the excess water.

Tomato horn worms can be a problem but I haven't had to deal with them (yet) other than one or two that I fed to the chickens. Keep your soil healthy so that you have healthy plants that can take a little chewing on. Plant the seedlings far enough apart to allow good air flow between the plants when they're full grown.

I love Sungold! I grow mine in the garden after starting under lights indoors. I cage them and don't prune anymore. I haven't noticed any difference when i pruned and when i didn't so being lazy, i quit. I do get some fruit cracking after a big rain, but i think heavy mulching helps that. I haven't noticed any special problems that aren't normal to tomatoes, other than finger blight....very serious... no cure.

I've enjoyed this thread. Some of our 2013 hits and misses from first time items were: Hits Mizuna: Comes up quickly from seed, produces abundantly and is a cut and come again veggie. Tokyo Bekana Grew very well here from seed in the spring and fall. We love it raw in salads as an alternative to lettuce. Fingerling potatoes: we grew five varieties and all did well and were DELICIOUS. Did very well at the farmers' market. Zephyr summer squash. These are very delicious and showed good disease resistance and yield. Safari zuchinni. It wasn't a good year for zukes for us, but these kept coming even after the others bit the dust. Red Russian kale. Produced very well. Tasty and tender. Moon and Stars Yellow Fleshed watermelons. We really enjoyed these. Not as sweet as Crimson Sweet, of course, but crispy and delicious. Fails Lemon cucumbers. Produced poorly. They taste fine but not worth the space they take up. Won't plant again. Burgundy okra. The problem with this is that the wildlife couldn't resist it. Deer and groundhogs destroyed it, while hardly bothering the Clemson Spineless. If you can keep the critters away, this would be a good choice. But we won't bother with it again. In Texas you might expect all kinds of miracles from these plants. All joking aside, my cherry tomato plants were actively producing and still flowering within my high tunnels the week of Thanksgiving when I stopped the heat and allowed them to freeze. These same plants were starting to produce fruit in mid May for me. You might expect the same with a little extra care. In my tunnels for tomatoes I use a stringline support which you probably can't see in the earlier picture. But I needed to lower the lines at least twice for these cherry types, SS-100 included. They have the potential to grow 20 ft' tall, without exageration. So consider a support system that will allow good ventilation and ease of picking throughout the season in mind. It is also another reason to seperate your basil row.

If you are planning on growing those varieties that can grow to 20 feet a high tunnel may be worth investing in. The greenhouse framework poovides the structural support for the plants by allowing you to attach stems to a draped stringline as they grow and you can even lower the plantsto keep picking at a comfortable level. The best part is that you can extend the growing/ harvesting season by 2-4 months. Keep in mind that these varieties are not only early producers but will continue to bloom and produce abundant fruit long after other varieties fizzle out. Costs per plant aren't as bad as other forms of support if you divide the cost over the life of the structure. This is one of the biggest payback investments you can make.

Ah ha ! So we understand each other and agree on the one getting over watered. I don't think it's in danger of death, but it's going to be ugly in the middle there and depending on how the root health is, probably a little more finicky to water. I would make myself a nice stepping stone spot right next to it, so as I water and I'm already tired, it's easy to step close and poke my finger in the soil to double check moisture. I make up my own soil mixes so not an expert on the one you bought. I know folks do use those types and are happy. I did pick up two bags of pre-mixed moisture control potting mix only because they were on sale, had a coupon, cost ended at $5, and I had a $5 rebate for each one. So free ! Used on as part of mixes for fuchsias and the other bag still sits. I don't trust our Oregon rain with such a mix. But that's me. I know I might over water so try to head things off ahead of time. Given how thirsty grown tomatoes are in pots, it doesn't seem like a particularity bad mix. It may be that the drain holes in that pot, and between the moisture control mix, plus the drain hole issue, plus the on the ground all added up to what happened. One or two of those things might have been fine, but three was too much when the rain and you with the hose all ganged up on the plant For a brand new gardener things look good. :) Lots of little tomatoes there too. Have you checked the FAQs for this group yet. Good basic fertilizer answers there. But you know, if this is the worst thing you do as a new gardener, your golden. LOL...i wish i could claim that line as an original, but i must give credit to my gardening hero, Jim Crockett of the PBS show Victory Garden from years ago. I still consult Jim's books on a regular basis.

Hi ya'll. Planted some sweet 100's for the first time this year. Do I need to cage them or do nothing at all. I was told by an old man (ha ha) that I could cage them to sky and that i would have more 'maters than i could shake a stick at ! Help !! they are growing like Kudzu .
