of winter, it just won't give us a break. High tremp tomorrow supposed to be 5, a whole 5 above. Lets see, it will be spring in only 54 days. I'm tired of wearing these alien looking goggles, but they do work fairly well. I've learned not to stand up and try to walk with them on. Switch to regular ones for about everythinh but for reading.

I would not mind the winters of my youth, 2 1/2 to 3 month snow, enough to go skiing every day, here and there a thaw and a day of snow to keep it white again and relatively even temps.
What gets me is this up and down. Yesterday and tonight we had thaw, snow, rain, ice rain, snow again then sleet. The trees slimmed down, their branches weighted down by ice, reaching to the ground and the power and oither lines look like the icicle decorations left over from Christmas.

Don't laugh, but I have gotten sick of sunshine and blue skies, dead pastures and dust! The dry well and toting water. It seems the weather has not been kind to anyone, has it?
When I opened the NOAA website this morning, there is happy news: some rain everyday, leading to a big storm this weekend.
The well may recover, at least enough to shower every once in a while and to be able to flush, if not overdoing it.
The pastures may even get green, the way they should be.

My Family has severe drop-itis, but I have it too. Also, I have more hobbies than they do and like many women, more of the stuff in the home is seen as "mine." Also, I am more likely to make a mess but EVENTUALLY pick it up ( I get organizing and cleaning spurts) , rather than create the archeological piles my other family members accumulate. Very frequently I want to rant at DH or DD about their mess. But, if I look around, I see, my laundry is not put away, I have a pile of mag's here, some gardening stuff there... I have made up my mind to work through all of my own clutter, habits, zones--whatever--meanwhile picking up others' stuff as much as I wish, or not, and just not say ANYTHING until I think I am in control of my own habits and stuff. I mean, I want to be able to look at a room and honestly see nothing there that I caused, did, bought, dropped, causing a problem. Because I know that that is what is bothering me the most--my own habits that I would like to change. In my family, there's not a big fuzzy feeling of "let's get organized together." And I don't feel comfortable spilling the blame out of frustration with my own problems. I also am taking a hard look at all my "homemaker" jobs and streamlining them ruthlessly--simpler groceries, meals, hobbies--so I don't blame someone else for my "complicated" life. I am lucky that my family also, to their credit, does not sit around expecting Betty Crocker or Martha Stewart. Instead, I'm the one who likes to cut and arrange flowers, or change the throw pillows, or cook, and then I find, maybe I took on too much for all of what else we've got going on, and no one to blame but me. This doesn't mean that DD or DH would not have their own chores or responsibilities or that I can't say to DD, please pick up your stuff from the den, we're trying to tidy up today. It just means I've decided not to aim any "we're such a mess!" at them at this point, because I don't feel I'm a good example myself, yet. For me, I need that feeling of personal control to have credibility to ask someone else to try to do more to help.

To each of you who have commented on this post, I want to thank you. It's been a week since asking the Houzz community what your thoughts, opinions, and preferences were, and you all had truly valuable input. Now that my company has gone, I can get back to becoming an informed consumer. After reading everyone's comments up to this point, here are my thoughts: I agree that there is simply too much differing information on the Internet and that I need to go in to a showroom (or two) with a few pots and pans I use daily and pretend to cook. My first choice would be to do a double wall oven, but though I may be able to do just that, I also would lose valuable real estate, which is why I was mostly decided on a range. I kinda do agree with Jerry when he said that appliances that do more than one function, only do one of them well, so by separating them, you can get the best of each. BTW Jerry, thanks for the pics - I love your Blue Star Wall Oven! Again, I need to go to showrooms, and research there. To those of you who loved their particular range, I have made a list and plan to compare in the showrooms. I do love the browning, faster and more even cooking that a convection oven allows; however, as I often cover food with foil when baking or broiling, I will look in to ovens that can do both. At this moment, I'm on the fence about an induction cook top. Though the greater majority of you preferred it, it rather sounded like a PITA getting the settings just right, and the fact that I'd have to additionally purchase a whole new set of cookware is a negative. Though gas is not nearly as clean or fast as induction, I kinda like being able to see how high or low the flame is - but don't get me wrong, I'm still undecided between the two. I'll make my decision in the showroom! Many of you brought up valuable points to consider that I would never have thought of. This post has been more help to me than all the hours of research on a gazillion sites. Thank you all!

Agree cabinets are good. New hardware can make a difference. Look at brushed nickel that will look nice with the stainless appliances. A soft white paint color is a good idea. I would remove the valances from the windows/door. Do you have privacy issues there? Edit some of the items on the counters and window sill. Also agree the backsplash isn't working with the counters. Find a simple, solid color tile for the backsplash that blends with the lightest color in the counter (cream?). You have pattern in the counter so I wouldn't add more in a backsplash. It's been awhile since I've seen a wall phone like that! ETA - My apologies for suggestions you didn't ask about. I had backsplash in my head since it's such a common question here.

I’m tired of jacking with the dryer vent duct. Any suggestions?

Use solid 4" round sheetmetal (not the thin aluminum ducts in the dryer section of the big box store - use the >=30ga sheetmetal in the HVAC section) from the ceiling to somewhere that can be accessible - it looks like only 2 bends. You can use hangers/straps screwed into the CMU wall (2 hole metal straps found in Plumbing section of big box with Trax screws into mortar joints, and/or plastic strap to hang from joists,). You should route around the electrical panel, not in front of it. There needs to be a clear space and move your dryer if you have to: The transition duct from the dryer to the permanent duct can be flex up to 8' long - the rigid flex is better than the vinyl or foil. They have plastic connection kits, but it looks like it should be easy enough in an open basement to rotate the dryer to put it on, then rotate it back and connect to your permanent exhaust.

I hear you George. Chicago is about 30 inches over a normal winters snow as of 2/1. We received 7+ inches between last night and today and it is still snowing. Negative 3 for tonight, high of 5 tomorrow and -6 at night.

I am so sick of coats, sweaters, boots and wearing layers. And a heating bill that was 3 times last years had me in tears.

Here in CA we need some moisture, We need rain and snow. The sierras need snow for the snow pack and the ski slopes. Even the bears are confused by the warm/dry weather. They are not hybernating.
We need rain to kick start lilo's well.

Nothing. Not a bit of snow! And here we are in the home stretch! It's such a weird winter. Bitter cold as it has never been with no snow? I don't get it. Day before yesterday, it rained so much, creeks were flooding their banks. What's it going to be like come spring, hot and steamy? What a pardigm shift.

I am happy, this weather is what goes for normal this time of year. Strange to be happy, as a rule I would complain about "all that rain"
and I have a whole week of it to look forward to, it rained all night! and for the weekend it's going to be pouting. How sweet it is!

I spoke to my mother last night. She lives in southwest, snowed-in Missouri. She hasn't been out of the house since Wednesday of LAST week, and doesn't plan on being out until perhaps tomorrow or Sunday.

She has the foresight to see this coming, though. Stocked up on food, etc., made sure there was enough propane in the gas tank to keep the furnace going. Phone lines are functioning and people call her regular to say "what's up?" OK, so maybe that's not literally what they say. lol But they do check in. So yeah, she's a little stir crazy. However she realizes this too shall pass. She's waiting it out.

For the past several years, we have not experienced "Winter" in east central Illinois. We made up for it this year. What is somewhat ironic is the the forecast indicates that we are due for a 'cold snap' beginning on Monday. It is currently 3ÃÂ°. Come on, what the hay!

Consolation: two weeks from today, March 20, I am on my second day of a cruise to Hawaii. I hope that the neighbors are willing to do lots about our weather and the snow and my house plants. Some many dinner pay-backs!
