vegetarian sources of nitrogen

Hi,

I built some new raised beds using native soil and turkey compost from natural gardener. My spinach was not doing well so I emailed the Williamson county extension and they replied that I don't have enough nitrogen. I've read that fish products, blood and bone meal... are a good sources of nitrogen, but I'm a vegetarian and would rather not use those products if I don't have to. I was thinking about using alfalfa pellets but another gardenweb thread mentioned that alfalfa may not have enough nitrogen for some plants such as tomatoes.

My questions are. 1) Does alfalfa contain enough nitrogen for nitrogen loving plants such as tomatoes and brassicas?, 2) If it does, how much do I apply?, 3) If it doesn't, what vegetarian source does?

I appreciate your help. Thanks, Ryan
