I ought to keep a log of calls

To see which daughter,DIL, GD or son calls the most to check up on their dad or grandfather, but I won't. I do know who never leaves his side though, his crazy cat. Since he has been ill she is plastered to him like velcro. If I feed her she goes to him like come and do this right. I think she thinks she is a nurse.

Animals KNOW.
Animals are aware on levels we aren't.
The family cat is doing her job, and then some.
If I had some Fancy Feast left from Valentines Day, I'd send her some---she's a good nurse, Leone---is she bossing you around, to boot?
George is a lucky man to have you AND Nurse Cat!

lol, I didn't think there would be this many responses, let alone so many funny ones! My personal favorite (good thing I wasn't drinking when I read it) was "but at least they have a garden which means they are basically decent people".... It's funny because i kinda sorta judge people a little based on their gardens or lack of a garden. I'm not saying they are soul-less empty people, but I can't relate to someone living in an otherwise nice house that's surrounded by nothing but empty lawn and 5 foundation shrubs.... and never changes. But when it all comes down to it I don't care what my neighbors do or what they think of my yard. Most think it's fine, some don't but I really don't let that concern me. The only time I caved was when my wife threatened to remodel the kitchen if I didn't finally mow the back lawn. It was our first summer in the house and I didn't see the point in mindlessly mowing all the back yard just so it was short. I let it go to seed, cut a couple paths through it and sat back to enjoy the wind rippling the grass while the kids chased each other around the trails. I do have a "vision" of how I want the place to look. It's definately my vision... for better or worse... and I'm still admitting I "ruin" it by letting the volunteers grow, but I feel better knowing I'm not the only softy. Campanula- I'll try and toughen up a little each year. This year I hoed out swaths of verbena seedlings and kiss me over the garden gate. Maybe next year I'm going after the sundrops. Oh and pumpkins are something else I can't pull. I don't think there are any fancy designer perennial beds out there that rely on the cenral element of a big mildewed pumpkin vine sprawling out into the lawn.

Since my climate is a bit similar to UK, it seems that with teas a problem is not that much caused by our winters or lack of heat in the summer, but rather late spring freezes and temperature fluctuations in early spring. Overhere we can get very warm February (up to +15C) and some roses break dormancy, just to get zapped by late frosts in March/April. It is my constant cause of frustration with hydrangeas, since if the new growth freezes, it is whole season of meh. It seems that you have to winter protect teas and chinas here at least for the first years to get some of the more woody canes, when settled they have way less problems with the climate. Own root probably would be a better option as well, since even if it is not cane hardy, it can grow back. I know somebody attempting to grow Lady Hilingdon climber 50 miles more inland from here and apparently it comes through the winter undamaged, but late spring, especially when wet, often is what kills it to the ground. It grows back and blooms though with no problem, so you get some sort of perennial rose. I am going to try a few chinas/more tender noisettes this season, so will see if it is possible to grow it here, although I am going to wrap them into agricultural fleece for the winter. I will go for own roots, but if to get it grafted I would vote for getting it from Trevor White, although Beales ones did for me almost as good. ;)

Wood would be a problem in the existing location, although with the new fireplaces you can get them installed just about anywhere. If you want to stick with the current location, then go to a good fireplace store and ask for a gas fireplace insert. Nowadays they are very efficient and can provide a very realistic flame. No flue doesn't matter, they can install one for you. And gas can be routed around many obstacles. If you want to change the location, a good store can help you decide where and install a wood fireplace. Fireplace Extraordinare has a fabulous woodburning fireplace.

Thanks! I'd call Sulphur Polypore the common name (had you used that, I'd have known what was meant!). "Chicken of the woods" definitely isn't a commonly used name, sounds more like someone's attempt at pretentious poetic invention to me, decidedly phoney :-) Looked up in Phillips & Burdekin Diseases of Forest and Ornamental Trees, and Laetiporus sulphureus is listed as an occasional cause of wood decay in hawthorn, so it should work. However, as it is listed as only occasional, it may be a difficult wood for it to use, perhaps with very slow growth in it. Other woods it utilises include oak, chestnut (Castanea, not Aesculus), cherry, and occasionall on pine, larch and beech. "... is commonly found causing serious decay in open-grown oaks and also in larger structural timbers. Even small traces of infection can continue their development in sawn timber, particularly if the wood remains moist" (so might be best not to try growing it indoors!!). I was told by more than one person that when I started chemo,be prepared for the cats' behavior to change. There is just something about it that cats sense,and it's not the fact that you aren't feeling well,it goes beyond that.I was fairly mobile and yet both cats followed me everywhere which was not their usual thing. I'm glad she is bringing him a little light in what is a gloomy time for George right now.

My cat plastered herself over my not stitched part of my stomach the moment I came back from the hospital. I was to lay flat and not move for a couple of more days, except for some walking every couple of hours. She had never slept in my bed before. During chemo she was always there when I came back from treatment and to this day, if I don't feel well, she sleeps with me. Oh, she also was my excercise coach once I had to move more, by always wanting to get out of the door which was the furthest away from where I was and it always involved 2 sets of stairs.
George, I am glad that you also have a nurse cat. Listen to her when she bosses you around.

There IS something so special about animals.
As others have said...listen to her.

My Mom had a small mutt for years.
He was somewhat protective of Mom but when she became ill, 'Trouble' was also Velcro.
He alerted my Dad a couple of times during the night when Mom would accidentally remove her oxygen during sleep.

Love 'em for all the love they give. I'm not a cat person (when I was little I always got scratched) but I've always had a dog. My little Poodle does the same, thinks she is my pillow. Always cleans my fingers and toes.

It makes me smile to think of her keeping him such close company. Just petting that soft fur will make him feel better.

This thought makes me smile. The nursing of critters is always such a comfort because they're so guileless and transparent. George, I'm glad to hear you have a kitty RN. You remain in my thoughts.
