Name That Plant!

Mystery vine + mystery other

Found a couple of question marks in the yard today.

Mystery vine

It's growing in a partial shade/filtered sun area and hasn't spread too far yet. Any idea what it is? It looks like it's trying to escape!

Mystery #2

This fast-growing plant popped up alongside some neglected bromeliads. It's about 1 1/2 feet tall, with a green, pencil-thick stem. The leaves are approx. 6 inches long, 2 1/2 inches wide and quite thin.

Woodbine (Parthenocissus quinquefolia or similar sp.)

I'd agree that Saltcedar nailed both of them for you. I would consider both to be weeds rather than desirable plants, especially as the Parthenocissus is growing up a gate that you probably want to continue using.

as grape can grow hundreds of feet long.. and produce mostly near to nothing... let me suggest.. that a free range one is rarely worth much if you are interested in grape.. spend the ten bucks and buy a named variety ... this is one case.. where native doesnt mean good.. to me anyway .. ken

Positive ID on #2.... Still unsure about #1, though.... I did a search for Mandevilla both on the web & the garden's plant database and none of the Mandevilla blooms match. The flower structure is CLOSE, but the foliage is off --- I couldn't find any Mandevilla with that dark purplish foliage & stems like the one in the picture. Nor could I find any Mandevilla berry shots as seen in the photo above. Any other possibilities for #1? Thanks again!!

" I do not want it to begin growing in other areas" Maybe too late already, it's busy creeping around under ground. Those flowers have billions of seeds too... The "morning glory" leaves trick people into letting these grow often.

What you have is akebia, also called chocolate vine. It supposedly smells like vanilla, but has chocolate colored flowers, but there's also a light flowered form. It prefers sun, but will tolerate part shade. I have a small cutting which is just starting to leaf out, but it's a long time from flowering so I can't provide you with more info yet. Thanks, saltcedar -- fast and accurate once again.

Bahia, the gate leads to an unused alley, so I'd happily surrender it to a more pleasant vine. But as you said, these weeds aren't exactly desirable. Time to pull them.
