Name That Plant!

Need Identification of this tree.

We bought this house in December, shortly after moving here. I've never seen this tree any other time of year than now and at it's really "bare" stage. Can you identify it for me? We thought maybe redbud until the little orange things erupted everywhere.

In case the pictures don't work they are little fuzzy orange blossoms (kind of remind me of mimosa flowers) that are growing on a non-mimosa tree. Right now there are no leaves on it, just the little flowers. Never saw the leaves so I don't know what they looked like and too many other trees to know which leaves belonged to this tree when we were raking them up.

There are too many named and unnamed (spontaneous as well as home-grown) purple-leaved plums around to be using a picture like this as the basis for assigning a particular cultivar name to a specific tree.

Need Help with Possible Cherry Tree Disease and Insect Identification

The insects in pics 2&3 look like giant bark aphids, Longistigma caryae. They don't normally infest cherries but perhaps the tree is stressed for another reason and is just vulnerable to insect predation. Typically any sort of garden treatment for aphids will control these pests - a strong steam of water, hort oil, neem oil, insecticidal soap, etc. I can't see the raised brown lesions well enough to determine if they are more than just normal cherry bark lenticels, although they look a bit too regularly spaced for lenticels. Is there any sign of a sawdust-looking substance at the base of the tree or hanging from any of these lesions? That could indicate borers, a common cherry issue. Is the tree otherwise healthy? Good foliage development, proper flowering, no stem or tip dieback? Black knot usually presents in the branches first and moves down into the trunk when the disease is well established. Any swollen, blackened nodes in visible in the branches?

Or silver maple. Or the hybrid between them, which is also commonly planted.

The only thing about your suggestions of the red maple (and this may not be relevant) is that the bark is vastly different than the ones in the picture posted by esh_ga. My tree has very smooth bark, not textured like the one in the picture. My tree's flowers are a bit different too--not nearly as many, and they are more orange than red, and more like little orange fuzzballs.

It is A maple, just wait for the leaves to come out and you'll be able to tell what kind.
