seed pod from an unknown yellow flower.

below is a pic I hope of the seed pod. The flower was similar to a yellow primrose, but this only gets about 6-8" tall. It has a sprawling habit, and I noticed today there is has a very big root exposed...kind of looks like a little sweet potato that has heaved out of the ground..

What might this be? It is a sweet little well behaved flower that blooms from spring until fall it seems.

The seed pod reminds me of Wild Yam, Dioscorea villosa. However, it isn't shaped exactly right. Also, the plant doesn't match your description. Could it be another plant in the same genus?

The seed pod is similar to the wild yam, but that isn't it....(looked at Google Images) This is not a vine.

Thanks lycopus, I thought it was in the nightshade family - but I would have never found it. It came up in an established garden area (z6) that I had disturbed earlier in the summer with a hoe. It appears to already have large seed pods (still green). I hope that the frost holds off a little longer so I can see what happens. Messy gardens are always full of surprises!!!

I got your message, looking forward to checking out your list. Let me know which Dianthus you want, I was going to start some cutting this week anyway so your timing is perfect!

Here's a description of Oenothera missouriensis from Gardens North:

Sprawling plant with dark green leaves for the front of the border or rockery. At the end of the day, enormous, fragrant, lemon-yellow flowers open followed by winged seedpods. Flowers on and off the entire summer. Flowers first year from seed.

Could this be your plant?

I'm pretty sure that's it,! Oenothera macrocarpa...according to the pic.

According to the article Remy linked to,
This species is a perennial with a fairly short bloom period. Its flowers may be seen in May and June, with the peak being mid-May in Kansas.

Like I said b4...mine blooms off and on all season, and is a real favorite. I am clueless where it even came from.
