oh no! topsoil filled with nut sedge!!!
Comments (3)Condolences! I have no idea about legal issues, but I saw this on a thread once: Image (about a third of the way down the page) was recommended for nutsedge control in lawns (it kills other grasses also). http://www.cooperseeds.com/lawnchem.php3?cat=weedcontrol#ornamec Here's the Univ. of California's IPM page for nutsedge: http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7432.html As difficult as it is to believe, nutsedge is intentionally planted; the tubers are used to make horchata. I'm so lucky here that I have three kinds of nutsedge (yellow and some purple nutsedge in the former pasture and green kylinga taking over the lawn). The nutsedges came with the house, but billions of little artemisia roots were part of a load of topsoil I bought a couple of years ago, so I can commiserate. I have successfully eradicated yellow nutsedge from certain small areas of lawn, simply by pulling the plants -- but I didn't have the same scale of problem that you have....See MoreNut Sedge in lawn
Comments (17)I was plucking what I think is nutsedge out of the edges of my lawn when I noticed that the weed was growing ON TOP of the soil, suspended by the sod! Each weed would have about an inch of pure white roots, followed by another 1/2 inch or so of dirty roots. I was reading that nutsedge primarily propagates through tubers, so maybe what i have isn't nutsedge at all?? Here's a typical one (that was growing out of the soil):...See MoreSlowing down nut sedge in the garden and banana bed (pics)
Comments (10)Roundup won't kill nut grass; in truth it kills the other grass that keeps the nut grass from getting out of control! manage herbacide(now named "SedgeHammer" -same stuff) kills nutsedge. It's bad stuff; cannot be used in or around veggies, fruits etc. at all. Crabgrass killer(Weed-B-Gone) is more commonly used here. I bought some but cannot seem to bring myself to use it ... don't know if it works. It's bad stuff too: also not on or around fruits, veggies or ornamentals. I don't know why I bought it last year - a moment of weakness I guess. Both are PAN Bad Actors - acutely toxic. Whatever you do, do *not* pull nut grass. That makes it spread more as the nodules(plural) will repo even more plants - pull one get five. Yikes! You have to dig it out, carefully, to get the entire root system. I've done that and it is, IMO, very hard to do because of the weak roots. Cutting it short and starving it of water works good enough here. Solarization seemed to work but it might just be hiding and waiting to pop-up later. It grows thru all mulches I have used, including black plastic. Has anyone tried a full vinegar spray on it?...See MoreNut grass in my compost.
Comments (22)What about its roots, where it hasn't sent up a piece of grass yet? I was told not to pull it because then all of the "nuts" in the root would send up new shoots. I have to say I am still fighting this beastie. I was in my daylily bed yesterday, and just SICK because I got a little carried away with the Round Up trying to get all the nut grass, and by doing so, I killed off several of my prized daylillies. I'm just SICK. And that's not all! Not only is the nut grass BACK in the bed, but you can stand at the top of the bed and see it "marching" out of the bed on both sides! And on top of that, it has invaded the bed on the right! (Deanna -- where do you find that product: Manage. I've never seen it, and I'm definitely in need!) Scotty, if you don't want to dump your compost bin, please try using a bit of it in a small place and checking to see if the nut grass came from there. I noticed you said you also used peat, and it wouldn't be the first time I've had products that were contaminated by a "beastie". But if it does grow out nut grass, then really -- you don't want more of this. I'm going to be fighting this all summer. That will make 2 1/2 years of fighting the darn stuff, and I know it came in on some plants I ordered. I may end up killing all the plants just to get rid of the nut sedge! Really, you don't want that. MacThayer...See MoreOrganic_johnny
