I have broccoli growing here in central AR all winter long. I bought the plants and put them in the ground, probably before Christmas, maybe before Thanksgiving. Cold has not hurt broccoli or brussels sprouts and we've gotten to 17 F, maybe. They're growing slow, but the broccoli has the flower heads growing on it now, just not big enough to harvest. They are protected by milk jugs, cans or tomato cages with bird block not for the cold, but against the critters.

Thanks for your responses. I guess I will have to try one again, but in a differnt spot this time. Mine was a Baptisia Alba. Now I need something to put in it's place. The sight gets mostly morning sun until almost mid day. in the same bed I have two different kinds of bee balm (one blueish, one red, different bloom times) and some red astilbe. I open to suggestions.

Might be a caerulea hybrid--the coronal filaments on caerulea are generally straight. Incarnata and Incense have wavy filaments. Any of those species will regrow from the roots in the spring, but caerulea can stand up to more freezing temps before dying back than the other two. If you could post a pic, or describe the leaves, that'd help. In any event, you probably don't have anything to worry about.

I really hope my stupidness didn't break this machine. If it did, they must be more fragile that I thought. I don't know about your duet but I don't think I could harm mine... it puts up with A LOT! With 4 kids, 3 huge dogs and having a home like Grand Central Station, our Duet has washed many things, including things it probably shouldn't have, without any trouble. I always throw a couple of towels in when I do sheets-- to me is seems like it helps them NOT to get so tangled. My kids have washed heavy ATV riding clothes with tons of mud on them and have the caused the washer to take forever to balance itself but after it does, there doesn't seem to ever be any problem. So quit kicking yourself in the behind!! :) When we had a bunch of BBs go through our washer (dang teenagers!) my husband was able to use the service manual to repair it himself.
